Objective: To characterize the elderly with physical limitations; to assess functional capacity as it relates to physical mobility, cognitive status and level of functional independence in activities of daily living, and to relate functional capacity to the risk for pressure ulcers. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional approach, conducted in households in the city of Joao Pessoa (PB) with seniors who presented physical limitation. Fifty-one elderly were investigated in a two-stage cluster sampling design. Results: There was evidence of impairments in functional capacity of the elderly aged 80 years or more, with more severe physical limitations, cognitive impairment and a higher level of dependency for activities. Significant differences were observed between the level of functional independence in performing activities of daily living and the risk of pressure ulcers. Conclusion: This study allowed for the identification of the elderly in functional decline and at risk for developing pressure ulcers, supporting the implementation of preventive actions at the household level.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic spinal cord is a public health problem due to the high morbidity and mortality worldwide. The objective of this research was to characterize the profile demographic and clinical partner of people with TRM; analyze correlations between clinical features of traumatic injury level and its complications. METHODS: Observational study, the cut cross-sectional with a quantitative approach, performed with 80 people with TRM. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential techniques statistics. RESULTS: The results show correlation of spinal cord injury in lumbar level with accidents with firearms, of chest injury to car accidents and cervical injuries the diving in shallow water. Regarding complications, quadriplegia had greater influence as a risk factor for UP, spasticity, orthostatic hypotension, urinary complications, autonomic dysreflexia and intestinal disorders in relation to paraplegia, but showed a protective factor to pain syndromes. CONCLUSION: The absence of notification is a limiting factor for research and construction of new public policies aimed at preventing determinants external causes of TRM, as well as development of actions aimed at specialized care to minimize complications and improve quality of life in this population.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is endemic in Brazil, while the number of diagnosed cases of the disease has made considerable decrease since the implementation of treatment with multidrug therapy. The objective of this research, analyze time trends in sociodemographic and clinical-epidemiological profile of leprosy in Paraiba, in the 2001-2011 period, and identify differences between the epidemiological trends within the period. METHODS: Epidemiological study of time, retrospective and documentary based series, produced using secondary data and Notification Diseases Information System. RESULTS: They evaluated data on 10.476 Sheets Notification single, between the years 2001-2011, based on descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed statistically significant differences between the two areas evaluated time, starting with the suggestive reduction of 42.7% of cases in P2 (2007-2011), although this timeline, the clinical characterization refers to the most serious states or late leprosy. CONCLUSION: Leprosy remains a relevant epidemiological dilemma, especially in view of the increase in the proportion of MB cases, glimpsed for the period studied.
