[Knowledge, attitude and practices regarding condom use among women prisoners: the prevention of STD/HIV in the prison setting].

Ana Izabel Oliveira Nicolau; Samila Gomes Ribeiro; Paula Renata Amorim Lessa; Alana Santos Monte; Elizian Braga Rodrigues Bernardo; Ana Karina Bezerra Pinheiro

The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practices of women prisoners regarding the use of female and male condoms as a means of prevention against STD/HIV. This quantitative and evaluative Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) study included 155 female prisoners. Data collection was performed between January and March 2010 at the State of Ceará Womens Penitentiary. Although the women had heard of and/or knew about the purposes of the use of condoms, only 35 (22.6%) had appropriate knowledge regarding male condoms, and 11 (7.1%) in regards to the use of female condoms. Their attitudes were less favorable regarding oral sex. Appropriate practice was not significantly representative, particularly regarding the female condom. Homo/bisexuality, gender issues, lack of knowledge, and the difficult access to condoms are obstacles that must be considered in the promotion of sexual health in the studied group.

The objective of this study was to identify the gynecologic and obstetric profile of imprisoned females in the State of Ceara. This is a documental retrospective study with a quantitative approach, performed in the Female Prison Institute of the State of Ceara with 672 medical files. Regarding age, 62.3% of the women were 31 years old. The most prevalent age bracket for menarche was 10 to 13 years, (57.2%) and age of first sexual experience was 11 to 15 years (55.8%). The most common contraceptive method used was tubal ligation (29.5%). Homosexual behavior was found in 17.9% of inmates. Data also demonstrate an elevated number of pregnancies and abortions. In conclusion, these women require more care from health professionals and more specific health interventions in the prison context since they present high gynecologic and obstetrical risks. descrIptors: Prisons. Elizian Braga Rodrigues Bernardo; Hellen Lívia Oliveira Catunda; Mirna Fontenele de Oliveira; Paula Renata Amorim Lessa; Samila Gomes Ribeiro; Ana Karina Bezerra Pinheiro

The study aimed to analyze the methodological course for translation and adaptation of scales in dissertations and theses of Brazilian nursing in the fiof Sexual and Reproductive Health. It is an integrative review of Brazilian dissertations and theses available in the electronic catalog of the Brazilian Nursing Association, in the period from 2000 to 2009, being identifi ed three theses which composed the elements of the study. The three analyzed theses had Beaton et al. as a methodological reference; however, they differ in the followed path as suggested by those authors. It was noticed a prevalence of non-uniformity of the process of translation and transcultural adaptation, as well as no detailed information regarding the methodological course. The study identifi ed the main focus of production of Brazilian nursing on the type of research methodology in the area of sexual and reproductive health, as well as compliance with the steps required to do so.The study aimed to analyze the methodological course for translation and adaptation of scales in dissertations and theses of Brazilian nursing in the field of Sexual and Reproductive Health. This correlational study aimed to verify the association between maternal variables and exclusive breastfeeding in a specialized outpatient clinic in the state of Ceara, Brazil. The practice of exclusive breastfeeding was observed, showing a decrease during the first six months of a childs life. Most women were young, with partners, with a good level of schooling, multigravidas and had six or fewer antenatal consultations in health centers. There was a significant association between multiparity and exclusive breastfeeding variables, showing up as a protective variable for this practice. Most women who breastfed exclusively said they had not received guidance on breastfeeding during prenatal care, which evidences the existence of other external factors that are favorable to exclusive breastfeeding. This correlational study aimed to verify the association between maternal variables and exclusive breastfeeding in a specialized outpatient clinic in the state of Ceará, Brazil. Hellen Lívia Oliveira Catunda; Elizian Braga Rodrigues Bernardo; Camila Teixeira Moreira Vasconcelos; Escolástica Rejane Ferreira Moura; Ana Karina Bezerra Pinheiro; Priscila de Souza Aquino

Objective: to highlight the methodological approach used in thesis/dissertations for constructing and validating protocols in the Nursing area. Method: a literature review was performed online at the Library of the Center for Study and Research in Nursing, and at the Thesis Databank of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel. Eight theses and 16 dissertations were included in the final sample. Results: it was found that the most common steps in constructing protocols were reviewing the scientific literature and using professionals to assist in this process. In studies related to protocol validation, the presence of groups of specialists/judges on the subject matter ranging from three to 16 in quantity was found, with the majority presenting up to ten judges. Regarding analysis of the validation process, we noticed a higher prevalence of agreement between the judges and the Content Validity Index. Conclusion: development of this type of technology constitutes a complex and multifaceted area, adapted to researchers’ expectations and objectives. DESCRIPTORS: Protocols. Methods.
