Seed vigor testing is an important component of quality control programs, and accelerated aging is a possible option in this process. This study was conducted to investigate procedures to assess seed vigor by the accelerated aging test in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) seeds. Samples from Setentao and Epace 10 cultivars, harvested in 1998, 2001, 2002 and 2003 were used. During the experimental period seeds were stored in plastic bags and kept at 10oC and 50% R.H. Accelerated aging was performed at 40, 42 and 45oC during 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours; seeds were kept in plastic boxes with 40mL of distilled water in a BOD chamber. Seeds were tested for germination and moisture content before and after aging. The best condition to evaluate physiological potential of cowpea seeds was the combination 42oC/48 hours.

Senna siamea is a tree from Thailand that has adapted well to the climatic conditions of the Northeast of Brazil, that has been used for arborization, hedges and timber production. This research was divided in two experiments that aimed to identify methods to break dormancy and verify how temperature and light can affect germination of its seeds. In the experiment the germination percentages of hard and dead S. siamea seeds were determined using the treatments: humid heat, immersion in sulfuric acid and hot water, mechanical scarification, aiming at breaking dormancy and the control. In the second experiment, S. siamea seeds that had been immersed in sulfuric acid were placed on filter paper and submitted to five light period/temperature combinations: continuous light and constant temperature (25oC), continuous light and two different temperatures (35oC/8h and 20oC/16h), continuous dark and constant temperature (25oC), continuous dark and two different temperatures (35oC/8h and 20oC/16h), and different light periods and temperatures (light/35oC/8h and dark/20oC/16h). From the experiments it was concluded that S. siamea seeds present dormancy. The best treatments for breaking dormancy were mechanical scarification and sulfuric acid. The seeds were indifferent to the light and their germination was not influenced by the tested temperatures.

This study aimed at verifying the effect of genotype x environment interaction on the relative contribution of yield components and final production of different cowpea genotypes. For this, data of yield components of 22 cowpea genotypes were evaluated in four environments in the State of Ceara. A one-way ANOVA tested the variability between genotypes and the Scott-Knott test compared the mean values of the genotypes. The correlations were estimated by a path analysis. A differentiated response from the genotypes to each environment was observed for all traits examined, indicating the need to perform the test for each situation separately. The number of pods per plant is the yield component with great potential of genetic gain in additional cycles of selection of more productive genotypes. The number of pods per plant and the number of grains per pod were the yield components with greater direct effects on the productivity.

The ultimate aim of this study was to apply a non-targeted chemometric analysis (principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis using the heat map approach) of NMR data to investigate the variability of organic compounds in nine genotype cowpea seeds, without any complex pre-treatment. In general, both exploratory tools show that Tvu 233, CE-584, and Setentão genotypes presented higher amount mainly of raffinose and Tvu 382 presented the highest content of choline and least content of raffinose. The evaluation of the aromatic region showed the Setentão genotype with highest content of niacin/vitamin B3 whereas Tvu 382 with lowest amount. To investigate rigid and mobile components in the seeds cotyledon, 13C CP and SP/MAS solid-state NMR experiments were performed. The cotyledon of the cowpea comprised a rigid part consisting of starch as well as a soft portion made of starch, fatty acids, and protein. The variable contact time experiment suggests the presence of lipid-amylose complexes.

The objective of this research was to identify genotypes tolerant to stress caused by NaCl and the mixture of NaCl, CaCl2 and MgCl2 in irrigation water in the early stages of development. The levels of electrical conductivity of saturation extract were 0, 0.25, 5.0 and 7.5dS m-1. The tolerance of cowpea was evaluated by the relative reduction in shoot dry matter of each genotype. The genotype CE-182 had more tolerant levels of 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5dS m-1 in saline water with NaCl. In the solution mixture of salts, the genotypes and CE-9 and CE-551 were the most tolerant. According to the results obtained by clustering using the UPGMA method it can verified that the most promising combinations for crosses which obtained superior progenies in the development of cultivars tolerant to salinity were found between genotypes CE-182 and CE-250 and between CE-551 and CE-9.
