Altruistic personality in the context of the empathy-altruism hypothesis

In this study the influence of the altruistic personality in general and social responsibility in particular on prosocial behaviour were investigated in the context of the empathy–altruism hypothesis. In an experiment 56 female participants had an opportunity to help a person in distress. In this setting, ease of escape without helping was manipulated. In addition, on the basis of their self‐reports of situation‐specific emotions, participants were divided into an empathic‐concern and a personal‐distress group. The results of the 2 (ease of escape) × 2 (predominant emotional response) design were in agreement with the empathy–altruism hypothesis. Further results indicated that in the easy‐escape condition an altruistic motivation prevailed, whereas in the difficult‐escape condition an egoistic motivation was more dominant. Besides the full scale, two subscales of social responsibility were formed: Moral Fulfilment of the Justified Expectations of Others and Adherence to Social Prescriptions. The full social responsibility scale was significantly related to helpfulness only in the difficult‐escape condition. Further analyses including the subscales showed that the component Moral Fulfilment of the Justified Expectations of Others correlated positively with helping in the easy‐escape condition. Results were interpreted as showing that specific profiles of personality variables are associated with helpfulness in the easy‐escape and difficult‐escape conditions. Copyright

Entwicklung und Validierung von Skalen zur Erfassung von Vermeidung und Angst in Partnerschaften Der Bochumer Bindungsfragebogen (BoBi)

Zusammenfassung. Die deutsche Adaptation der „Experiences in Close Relationships“ (ECR) wird vorgestellt, der Bochumer Bindungsfragebogen (BoBi), ein Messinstrument zur Selbsteinschatzung der partnerschaftlichen Bindung entlang der beiden Dimensionen Vermeidung und Angst. Der BoBi wurde 435 Studierenden und 178 ambulanten Patienten einer psychosomatischen Klinik vorgegeben. Die zweifaktorielle Struktur des ECR konnte fur den BoBi bestatigt werden. Vergleiche der BoBi-Skalen mit weiteren Partnerschafts- und Personlichkeitsvariablen erbrachten, dass Vermeidung vor allem mit dem Fehlen von romantischer Liebe und geringerem Partnerschaftserfolg einhergeht, Angst ist durch besitzergreifende Liebe, ein Gefuhl der Verbundenheit mit dem Partner und geringes Selbstwertgefuhl gekennzeichnet. Dieses Ergebnismuster belegt die Konstruktvaliditat des BoBi. Der BoBi kann gleichermasen in Stichproben aus der Normalbevolkerung wie im klinischen Bereich eingesetzt werden. Studien mit dem BoBi konnen mit internationalen Studien mit dem ECR verglichen werden. Relationship Satisfaction Across European Cultures The Role of Love Styles

This study examines the connection of love styles with relationship satisfaction on the basis of cross-cultural research, including Bosnia, Germany, Romania, Russia, and German immigrants from Russia and Turkey. Love styles include romantic love, friendship love, game-playing love, possessive love, altruistic love, and pragmatic love. The validation of the measurement model across cultural groups was successful because partial measurement invariance was secured, which allows for the application of correlation, regression, and path analysis. Results indicate that the effects of love styles on relationship satisfaction were consistent across cultures with the exception of game-playing love that negatively predicted relationship satisfaction for Germans, Romanians, and Turkish migrants but not for Bosnians, Russians, and Russian migrants. In addition, cultural variation occurred with respect to the strength of the associations. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to universality and cultural relativity. In general, the effect of love styles on well-being turned out to be manifold.

Skalen zur Erfassung der Equity in Partnerschaften (SEEP)

Zusammenfassung. Die vorliegende Forschung dient der Entwicklung von Skalen zur Erfassung der Equity in Partnerschaften (SEEP), die zwischen partnerbezogenen und personbezogenen Beitragen der Partner differenzieren. Drei Studien wurden durchgefuhrt (N = 302, N = 160, N = 128). Die in Studie 1 berechnete Hauptkomponentenanalyse kontrastiert eine partnerbezogene Dimension Mogen/Gefuhle mit zwei personbezogenen Dimensionen: Sozialer Status und Attraktivitat. Die aus diesen Dimensionen abgeleiteten Skalen weisen gute interne Konsistenzen auf. Ein starker Hinweis auf die Validitat der Skalen sind die hohen Intra-Paarkorrelationen. Wie erwartet fanden wir einen kurvilinearen Zusammenhang zwischen der Skala Mogen/Gefuhle und Beziehungserfolg (Gluck, sexuelle Zufriedenheit und wahrgenommene Beziehungsstabilitat). Diffusion von Verantwortung

Verantwortungsubernahme ist das Ergebnis eines Entscheidungsprozesses, der Aufmerksamkeit, gedankliche Auseinandersetzung und die Entstehung von Motivation umfasst. Beobachter von Notlagen anderer werden durch hemmende Einflusse veranlasst, Verantwortung abzulehnen. Unter den Hemmfaktoren spielt die Diffusion der Verantwortung eine zentrale Rolle. Sie wird durch die Anwesenheit anderer Beobachter, die auch eingreifen konnten, ausgelost. Wenn sich andere Zeugen passiv verhalten, stellen sie ein Vorbild fur Vermeidung von Verantwortung dar. Die Diffusion der Verantwortung kann aber auch unter bestimmten Bedingungen verringert werden oder ganz entfallen. Das ist dann der Fall, wenn die Kompetenz der anderen Zeugen relativ gering im Vergleich zu der eigenen Kompetenz ist, wenn die Zeugen untereinander befreundet sind und wenn die Notlage eine Gefahrensituation darstellt.

Justice in Performance Situations: Compromise Between Equity and Equality

Fairness gives social relationships structure and meaning. Individuals attach crucial importance to the perceived fairness of relationship partners which serves as a signal as to whether the relationship is viable or not. At the same time, fairness issues are sometimes controversial. For example, how do contradictory fairness rules influence reward allocation? Such contradictions of rules constitute a problem both in philosophical treatments of moral action and in the social psychology of fairness. In the context of performance, the application of one of two fairness rules appears reasonable: equity and equality. Either the allocators focus on only one of these normative rules or they attempt to generate a compromise between both rules. The reward expectation hypothesis which is part of expectation states theory offers a solution to this problem: It delineates a formula which allows an estimation of the impact of equity and equality for a given reward allocation among a known number of group members whose relative performances are quantified. The use of the formula is explained on the basis of empirical data obtained in a scenario study in which the performances of group members were depicted as unequal. Results indicate that the formula generates valid estimates of weights which represent the relative impact of equity and equality on reward allocation. In addition, the reward expectation hypothesis offers a new interpretation of the reconstruction of performance distributions on the basis of a known reward distribution.

The brave blue world: Facebook flow and Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD)

The present study investigated the relationship between flow experienced when using Facebook (Facebook flow; i.e., experience of intensive enjoyment and pleasure generated by Facebook use due to which the Facebook activity is continued even at high costs of this behavior) and Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD). In a sample of 398 Facebook users (age: M (SD) = 33.01 (11.23), range: 18–64), the significant positive association between Facebook flow and FAD was positively moderated by the intensity of Facebook use. Exploratory factor analysis revealed that all six items assessing FAD loaded on the same factor as two items belonging to the subscale telepresence of Facebook flow. Therefore, the close link between Facebook flow and FAD may in particular result from the immersion in an attractive online world created by Facebook, where users escape to forget their everyday obligations and problems. Present results provide first evidence that Facebook flow may be an anteceded of FAD and indicate the mechanisms that may contribute to its development and maintenance. Practical applications for future studies and limitations of present results are discussed.

Kulturelle Vielfalt in engen Beziehungen am Beispiel der Liebe

In diesem Beitrag, der auf Erkenntnissen der Beziehungsforschung, der kulturvergleichenden Psychologie, der Neuropsychologie und der Sozialpsychologie beruht, geht es um den Zusammenhang zwischen Liebe und Beziehungszufriedenheit in einer kulturvergleichenden Perspektive. Im ersten Teil wird die Bedeutung der Liebe in Alltag und Wissenschaft dargestellt. Im Weiteren werden Studien betrachtet, die den Zusammenhang zwischen Liebe und Beziehungszufriedenheit in kulturvergleichender Perspektive erfassen. Auf der Grundlage von kulturvergleichenden Studien werden kulturelle Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede in der Vorhersage der Beziehungszufriedenheit durch Liebe hervorgehoben. Wahrend die Ergebnisse fur den Zusammenhang der Beziehungszufriedenheit mit romantischer und altruistischer Liebe sich in den untersuchten Kulturen ubereinstimmend positiv gestalten, erweist sich der Zusammenhang mit spielerischer Liebe als durch kulturelle Vielfalt gekennzeichnet. Somit sind neben universellen Zusammenhangen auch kulturelle Besonderheiten zu berucksichtigen, wenn es um Liebe und Beziehungszufriedenheit geht.

Helfer, Helfen und Altruismus

Im Mittelpunkt dieses Beitrags stehen sowohl Laienhelfer als auch professionelle Helfer, wobei der Schwerpunkt der Betrachtung in den einzelnen Unterabschnitten wechselt. Im ersten Teil wird auf die Bedeutung sozialer Unterstutzung durch Laienhelfer fur die Bewaltigung belastender Situationen eingegangen. In diesem Zusammenhang werden verschiedene Formen sozialer Unterstutzung unterschieden, und ihre Effektivitat wird diskutiert. Im Weiteren geht es um prosoziale Normen und die Frage, wie Hilfeempfanger auf Laienhilfe reagieren. Hilfesuchen und Hilfeerhalten sind Bestandteil von moglicherweise problembelasteten sozialen Interaktionen, die schon in der Schule viele negative Implikationen haben, wenn Hilfeempfanger verspottet werden und Geber angeben (Krappmann/Oswald 1988).

Conditions for Establishing a System of Fairness: Comment on Brosnan (2006)

Brosnan (2006) proposed that animal responses to inequity mirror human response tendencies that are summarized as inequity aversion. In this comment two issues are raised. The first issue deals with the assumption of continuity between humans and nonhuman species in reference to cooperative behaviour. The second issue focuses on the idea that the state of inequity aversion may motivate intervention processes.
