The dark side : critical cases on the downside of business

Emmanuel Raufflet; Albert J. Mills

This paper describes the authors solution to the challenges of turning a no-distance collaboration into a long-distance one. The solution was The Dark Side of The Force, a new coding environment designed to meet the authors’ needs. In this paper we describe what led to the development of The Dark Side, and how The Dark Side led to new artistic paths.

Re-Mapping Corporate Environmental Management Paradigms

Emmanuel Raufflet

This paper uses a radical approach to propose a classification of corporate environmental management that goes beyond technical jargon, corporate “mixed messages,” and short-term operations. The author proposes to map the paradigms underpinning the three main forms of corporate environmental management to be composed of (1) a specific of framing the issue of CEM, and correspondingly, to a set of representations of (2) the firm, of (3) the natural environment, and of (4) the relation between the firm and the natural environment. I identified three paradigms. The first form is incremental; it involves business operations and is essentially a reactive behavior, whereby companies reduce their direct impact on the biosphere. The second form is adaptive; it strives to design production and organizational systems along the lines of ecosystems dynamics. This second form of CEM attempts to reorganize corporate activities in terms of flow and energy processes integrated and interdependent with those of other firms. The third form of CEM is radical.

Innovation in business‐community partnerships: evaluating the impact of local enterprise and global investment models on poverty, bio‐diversity and development

Emmanuel Raufflet; Alain Berranger; Jean‐François Gouin

Purpose – Over the last decade, several innovative business‐community partnerships have emerged to address simultaneously two pressing development issues: poverty reduction and biodiversity conservation. The purpose of this paper is to identify relevant models and to propose a first evaluation of these models in relation to development.Design/methodology/approach – The models were identified following a literature review and were evaluated using Amartya Sens definition of poverty.Findings – The paper identifies two models: the local enterprise model and the global investment model. While the local model relies mainly on local resources, the global investment model includes local and global organizations and institutions. The paper has analyzed the respective impacts of these new business‐community partnerships, including their governance schemes, on communities and ecosystems through the lens of Amartya Sens definition of poverty and development. The key finding is double. First, both these models are s...

Pluralism in Organizations: Learning from Unconventional Forms of Organizations

Luc Brès; Emmanuel Raufflet; Johnny Boghossian

The bureaucratic organization is still regarded as the conventional organizational form, but is ill-suited to an increasingly pluralistic world. Research on the variety of organizational forms has increased dramatically over the past three decades and offers the potential to understand better how pluralism is manifested and managed within organizations. However, this research remains fragmented. The purpose of this paper is to review and synthesize research on unconventional organizations to explore how organizations resolve or attenuate the tensions related to pluralism. Drawing from research in leading management journals, it covers seven distinct literatures: ‘referent organization’, ‘temporary organization’, ‘pluralistic organization’, ‘meta-organization’, ‘bridging organization’, ‘hybrid organization’ and ‘field-configuring event’. For each literature, the authors trace the genealogy of the key concepts and review their distinct insights regarding organizational pluralism. They then synthesize and discuss their collective contributions and conclude with avenues of research for pluralism in organizations.

Challenging Stakeholder Salience: Lessons from Dormant Local Stakeholders

Sofiane Baba; Emmanuel Raufflet

Abstract Stakeholder thinking has contributed considerably to the organizational literature by demonstrating the significance of the environment in managing organizations. Stakeholders affect and are affected by organizations’ daily operations and decisions. They have varied and often conflicting interests, making it necessary for managers and organizations to know who they are as well as their attributes. Consequently, Mitchell et al. (1997) developed the stakeholder salience theory to help managers and organizations identify the power of certain stakeholders and their salience to the organization. With a few exceptions, the mainstream stakeholder salience theory is in many ways still largely static, short-term oriented, and firm-centered. The aim of this paper is to revisit certain conformist assumptions concerning the role of marginalized stakeholders, or “dormant” stakeholders, in stakeholder thinking. Overall, this chapter is a call to a new conceptualization of stakeholders that reintroduces stakeholder dynamics at the core of stakeholder thinking to overcome its restrictive shortcomings. We argue that managing stakeholder relationships is not simply meeting stakeholder demands but also involves taking into account the long-term dynamics of stakeholder interactions.

Alicia Meneces and the challenges of Aguablanca

Emmanuel Raufflet; Luz-Dinora Vera

Subject area Urban poverty, mobilization, leadership, communication Study level/applicability This case is intended for graduate/postgraduate and MBA courses that discuss management issues in relation to corporate social responsibility, business and society or global issues. This case was successfully tested in an MBA course on sustainable development. These teaching notes result from this in-class experience. Case overview The morning of January 22, 2009. Cali, Colombia – Alicia Meneces was a member of the inaugural panel of the Simposio Internacional: Microfinanzas y Construccion de Paz (International Symposium: Microfinance as a Tool for Peacebuilding). The panel was composed of Alvaro Uribe (President of the Republic of Colombia), Enrique Garcia Rodriguez (President of the Development Bank of Latin America-CAF) and Luis Alberto Moreno (President of the Inter-American Development Bank). Her presence contrasted with that of the other panelists on several accounts: she was the only woman, she was the only panelist with direct and daily experience in poor neighborhoods and she was the only one familiar with the everyday processes of community mobilization in relation to microcredit in underprivileged communities. The case focuses on the message that Alicia Meneces intended to deliver to the audience of the Symposium based on her trajectory as a woman, as a community leader, and as the founder of the first Grameen microfinance institution in Colombia. Expected learning outcomes After using this case, students will be able to improve their understanding of poverty traps in developing countries; appreciate the challenges of living in poverty and the mechanisms of poverty production; and understand different forms of leadership. Supplementary materials Teaching Notes are available for educators only. Please contact your library to gain login details or email [email protected] to request teaching notes.

Hydro-Québec and the Crees: the challenges of being accountable to First Nations – case and teaching notes

Eduardo Schiehll; Emmanuel Raufflet

This case highlights various phases in four decades of relations between Hydro-Quebec, a provincial utility, and the Crees, a First Nation living mainly in northern Quebec, progressing from conflicts and impasse to accountability. It highlights two processes: 1) the stages in the relational process between a company and a community from the perspective of a social license to operate at the interorganisational level; 2) management accounting processes, which translate into corporate commitments and agreements concerning accountability and transparency. The major purpose of this case is to provide material (background) for discussion on how a company can improve its corporate social responsibility by enhancing transparency and accountability towards its stakeholders. This case illustrates how Hydro-Quebec has used accountability mechanisms such as voluntary and mandatory disclosure, environmental impact measurement and assessment, and compensation to engage with the First Nations and to build a long-term reciprocity-based relationship with them.
