Background and Aims Phubbing can be described as an individual looking at his or her mobile phone during a conversation with other individuals, dealing with the mobile phone and escaping from interpersonal communication. In this research, determinants of phubbing behavior were investigated; in addition, the effects of gender, smart phone ownership and social media membership were tested as moderators. Methods To examine the cause–effect relations among the variables of the theoretical model, the research employs a correlational design. Participants were 409 university students who were selected via random sampling. Phubbing was obtained via the scales featuring mobile phone addiction, SMS addiction, internet addiction, social media addiction and game addiction. The obtained data were analyzed using a correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis and structural equation model. Results The results showed that the most important determinants of phubbing behavior are mobile phone, SMS, social media and internet addictions. Discussion Although the findings show that the highest correlation value explaining phubbing is a mobile phone addiction, the other correlation values reflect a dependency on the phone. Conclusions There is an increasing tendency towards mobile phone use, and this tendency prepares the basis of phubbing.

Engin Karadağ; Nuri Baloğlu; Abdullah Çakir

In this study, the direct and indirect relations between school culture and the organisational commitment of primary school teachers were analyzed. The subjects of the research consisted of primary school teachers who worked at a district in Istanbul in the academic year 2007–2008. The sampling group was defined by the cluster sampling method. In total 200 teachers participated. Two scales were used to collect data, the organisational commitment scale (OCS) and the school culture scale (SCS). Linear regression and path analysis were used to explain the influence of school culture on organisational commitment, and LISREL 7 was used as a structural equation model. The findings indicated that although there was a positive correlation between school culture and organisational commitment, the direct effect of school culture on organisational commitment was not meaningful.

Öğretmen Yetkinliğinin Tarihsel Gelişimi ve Ohio Öğretmen Yetkinlik Ölçeği: Türk Kültürüne Uyarlama, Dil Geçerliği ve Faktör Yapısının İncelenmesi

Nuri Baloglu; Engin Karadağ

Yetkinlik, basarili bir ogretim gorevi icin gerekli bir niteliktir. Ogretmenler bu niteligin temellerini ogretmenlik egitimi suresi icerisinde (egitim fakultelerinde) kazanmakta, ilk ve ortaogretim kurumlarinda yuruttukleri ogretim gorevi icerisinde de gelistirmektedirler. Yetkinlik konusunun kuramsal temelleri Rotter’in (1966) Kontrol Odagi ve Bandura’nin (1977) Sosyal Ogrenme kuramlarina dayanir.

Introduction to Meta-Analysis

Nazım Çoğaltay; Engin Karadağ

As a means to synthesize the results of multiple studies, the chronological development of the meta-analysis method was in parallel to a variety of definitions in the literature. Meta-analysis can be defined in different ways: as a means of summarizing and combining the quantitative results of research or as a method used to reach the quantitative effect size based on individual studies. Meta-analysis uses many quantitative approaches and calculation formulas when compiling multiple research findings. In this sense, no researcher needs to be an expert in all types and calculation formulas for all types of meta-analysis. However, if the researcher lacks familiarity with at least some of the main concepts of meta-analysis, then the correct results may not be obtained. This chapter aims to explain some of the main concepts of meta-analysis.

Analyzing process of problem solving with group via statistical discourse analysis. Educational Sciences: Theory & Practice, 18, 229–252. http://dx.doi.org/10.12738/estp.2018.2.0309 Abstract The aim of this research is to examine the effects of various variables (cognitive flexibility, school achievement, physics course success, gender, popularity, family income level) and communication that occur between students in the problem solving process of the high school students. The research, which was designed according to the mixed research approach, was carried out with 80 tenth grade students determined by high school education and purposive sampling. It is given in research; the problem form was obtained by cognitive flexibility scale and observations, the discourses obtained from the observations were coded, and the data obtained from the other variables were categorized. Problem solving situation is coded with rubric in accordance with ordinal variable. Data is analyzed by modelling with multi-level sequential logistic regression and sequential logistic regression analysis. Findings showed that obtaining a creative solution to the problem is related to the success of the physics course related to solution of the problem rather than the general academic achievement, it is related to cognitive flexibility level, gender, family income level. The higher the level of cognitive flexibility and the level of family income, the higher likelihood of reaching creative solutions. The probability of women reaching creative solution is lower than men. The number of discourses and rudely disagreeing discourses in schools with low achievement levels are higher than those of successful schools. While presenting suggestions that are modelled as descriptive in reaching creative solutions, discourse of ignorance is meaningful variable; approval, politely disagreeing, rudely disagreeing are not meaningful variables.
