Eye movement patterns in linguistic and non-linguistic tasks in developmental surface dyslexia

Ten subjects who could be reliably assessed as surface dyslexics were selected on the basis of a large test battery. Eye movements in non-linguistic and linguistic tasks were studied in these subjects. Stability of fixation on a stationary stimulus was examined. Performance of dyslexics was no different from that of an age-matched control group. Similarly, no difference was observed between the two groups when they were requested to saccade to a rightward or leftward target. On the other hand, while reading short passages, dyslexics showed an altered pattern of eye movements with more frequent and smaller rightward saccades as well as longer fixation times. The reading pattern was analysed by eye tracking. Numerous fixations were used to read a single word in a fragmented way. Longer words showed a higher number of fixations. Overall, it was concluded that surface dyslexia is not associated with oculo-motor dysfunction and the study of eye movements in reading reveals the processing through orthography-to-phonology conversion characteristic of surface dyslexia. The importance is stressed of examining selected groups of subjects in the psychophysiological study of dyslexia.

Developmental surface dyslexia is not associated with deficits in the transient visual system

DEFICITS of the transient visual system have been reported in unselected groups of dyslexics. The aim of this study was to examine whether this finding holds when subjects with a specific type of developmental reading disorder (surface dyslexia) are considered. Ten Italian children were examined. They all presented the characteristic markers of surface dyslexia: slow and laborious reading with errors in tasks which cannot be solved with a grapheme-phoneme conversion (i.e. homophones). Contrast sensitivity thresholds to phase-reversal gratings were within normal limits for most subjects both for stimuli presented centrally and in the right parafovea. This indicates that developmental surface dyslexia is not associated with a deficit in the transient system. In contrast, sensitivity to high spatial frequency stationary stimuli was reduced.

Action imitation changes perceptual alternations in binocular rivalry.

Binocular rivalry is a visual phenomenon in which perception alternates between two different monocular images presented to each of the two eyes. Here, we propose using this phenomenon as a method to study the relation between action execution and action perception. In our experiment, a simple background (a checkerboard) was contrasted with a video representing a hand continuously grasping and releasing a ball. In Experiment 1, our subjects were asked to reproduce the perceived movement with their right hand whenever they became aware of it and to stop doing this when the checkerboard dominated. Our results revealed that motor imitation of the perceived action significantly increased the time spent perceiving the hand. Three control experiments showed that these effects were not due to a generic involvement of focused attention (Experiment 2 and 3), to a verbal description of the performed action (Experiment 3) or to the execution of an unrelated movement of the hand (Experiment 4). Although an intrinsic connection between action execution and attention cannot be excluded with certainty, and the boundary between action imitation and unrelated action execution may vary along various degrees of similarity, on the whole, the present results seem to suggest, at least on a preliminary basis, that action imitation do play a relevant role in the perception of action. We discuss these findings in the frame of current theories concerning the relation between perception and action.

Selective reading slowness in a traumatic patient with impairment in basic visual processes

Following a closed-head injury, G.M., a 17-year-old male, showed a reading disturbance in the absence of other cognitive deficits. G.M.s reading was exceedingly slow, although virtually error free. Analysis of his disorder indicated an inability to read words presented tachistoscopically to the left (spared) visual field. Therefore the reading deficit cannot be interpreted as simply due to the visual field reduction (hemianopic alexia). Reading speed was clearly affected by word length, a finding typical of letter-by-letter reading. Both behavioral and psychophysical testing indicated a selective reduction of visual discrimination and detection (particularly in the range of high spatial frequency information) in portions of the left hemifield which appeared spared upon perimetric examination. Overall, it is suggested that the reading deficit, phenomenologically similar to that of other letter-by-letter readers, can be interpreted as due to a combination of basic visual perturbations: visual field cut with macular splitting and deficit of processing of high spatial frequency information.

The ‘Enfacement’ illusion: A window on the plasticity of the self

Understanding how self-representation is built, maintained and updated across the lifespan is a fundamental challenge for cognitive psychology and neuroscience. Studies demonstrate that the detection of body-related multisensory congruency builds bodily and facial self-representations that are crucial to developing self-recognition. Studies showing that the bodily self is more malleable than previously believed were mainly concerned with full-bodies and non-facial body parts. Crucially, however, intriguing recent evidence indicates that simple experimental manipulations could even affect self-face representation that has long been considered a stable construct impervious to change. In this review, we discuss how Interpersonal Multisensory Stimulation (IMS) paradigms can be used to temporarily induce Enfacement, i.e., the subjective illusion of looking at oneself in the mirror when in fact looking at another persons face. We show that Enfacement is a subtle but robust phenomenon occurring in a variety of experimental conditions and assessed by multiple explicit and implicit measures. We critically discuss recent findings on i) the role of sensory extero/proprio-ceptive (visual, tactile, and motor) and interoceptive (cardiac) signals in self-face plasticity, ii) the importance of multisensory integration mechanisms for the bodily self, and iii) the neural network related to IMS-driven changes in self-other face processing, within the predictive coding theoretical framework.

Perceptual integration and attention in human extrastriate cortex

Visual crowding is a perceptual phenomenon with far-reaching implications in both perceptual (e.g., object recognition and reading) and clinical (e.g., developmental dyslexia and visual agnosia) domains. Here, we combined event-related fMRI measurements and wide-field brain mapping methods to investigate whether the BOLD response evoked by visual crowding is modulated by different attentional conditions. Participants underwent two sessions of psychophysical training outside the scanner, and then fMRI BOLD activity was measured simultaneously in early visual areas (including the visual word form area, VWFA), while they viewed strongly-crowded and weakly-crowded Gabor patches in attended and unattended conditions. We found that crowding increased BOLD activity in a network of areas including V1, V2, V3A, V4/V8, and VWFA. In V4/V8 and VWFA we found an increased activity related to attention. The effect of crowding in V1 was recorded only when attention was fully devoted to the target location. Our results provide evidence that some area beyond V1 might be the likely candidate for the site of crowding, thus supporting the view of visual crowding as a mid-level visual phenomenon.
