Sustainable development in the BRICS countries: an efficiency analysis by data envelopment

Naja Brandão Santana; Daisy Aparecida do Nascimento Rebelatto; Ana Elisa Périco; Enzo Barberio Mariano

There is much concern about the social and environmental impacts caused by the economic growth of nations. Thus, to evaluate the socio-economic performance of nations, economists have increasingly addressed matters related to social welfare and the environment. It is within the scope of this context that this work discusses the performance of countries in the BRICS group regarding sustainable development. The objective of this study regards evaluating the efficiency of these countries in transforming productive resources and technological innovation into sustainable development. The proposed objective was achieved by using econometric tools as well as the data envelopment analysis method to then create economic, environmental, and social efficiency rankings for the BRICS countries, which enabled to carry out comparative analyses on the sustainable development of those countries. The results of such assessments can be of interest for more specific scientific explorations.

Transformation of wealth produced into quality of life: analysis of the social efficiency of nation-states with the DEA's triple index approach

Enzo Barberio Mariano; Daisy Aparecida do Nascimento Rebelatto

Although an essential condition for the occurrence of human development, economic growth is not always efficiently converted into quality of life by nation-states. Accordingly, the objective of this study is to measure the social efficiency—the ability of a nation-state to convert its produced wealth into quality of life—of a set of 101 countries. To achieve this goal, the Data Envelopment Analysis method was used in its standard, cross-multiplicative and inverted form, by means of a new approach called ‘triple index’. The main results indicated that the former Soviet republics and Eastern European countries stood out in terms of social efficiency. The developed countries, notwithstanding their high social indicators, did not excel in efficiency; however, the countries of south of Africa, despite having the worst social conditions, were also the most inefficient.

Análise da relação entre estrutura e desempenho de redes interorganizacionais colaborativas

Enzo Barberio Mariano; Fábio Müller Guerrini; Daisy Aparecida do Nascimento Rebelatto

Increasingly, companies have realized the benefits of establishing alliances with other companies forming networks. These benefits or advantages can be related to a variety of goals, which are monitored by different performance indicators. This study aimed to determine the most appropriate structural features considering a range of possible performance indicators of an inter-organizational collaborative network. Therefore, an exploratory literature review was conducted using two databases and a qualitative approach to systematize the information found. The main result obtained was the creation of a theoretical framework that systematizes the relationship between network structure and performance. It is believed that this study can contribute to a yet little-explored area of research.

Custo/benefício de aeronaves: uma abordagem pela Análise Envoltória de Dados

Rafael Iglesias Reinas; Enzo Barberio Mariano; Daisy Aparecida do Nascimento Rebelatto

The objective of this paper was to apply the operational research technique of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), through the composite index of classic and inverted borders, to evaluate the cost-benefit of civil transport aircrafts. To this end, a) market price, and b) operating costs were used as inputs; and, a) payload, b) cruise speed, and c) maximum reason climb with one engine were used as outputs. To ensure homogeneity of DMUs, the planes were divided according to the propulsion system and in the following categories: regional, narrow-body and wide-body; they were also grouped into different ranges, so that the best cost-benefit for each aircraft could be identified. Results allowed for the following conclusion: the best cost-benefits were found in planes where the production had already been discontinued, but they were not very technologically outdated yet.
