This study addresses the effects of rock characteristics and blasting design parameters on blast-induced vibrations in the Kangal open-pit coal mine, the Tülü open-pit boron mine, and the Kırka open-pit boron mine. In this study, multiple vibration measurements have been conducted, and the related data have been analyzed and evaluated. Several artificial neural network (ANN) and regression models based on the same blasting design parameters, resistivity, and P-wave and S wave velocities of the surrounding rocks have been constructed to estimate the peak particle velocities and the frequencies of related blast-induced vibrations. The data derived from these models and the classical evaluations indicate that ANNs provide more reliable results than the other methods.

Determination of restitution coefficients for various granite samples

Ercan Arpaz

The restitution coefficient is used to measure the energy loss between two colliding objects. It is therefore a common research topic in several fields such as physics, engineering, and medicine for which the energy behavior corresponding to impact is important. This topic, especially in recent years, has also begun to attract interest for applications in mining engineering, which was initially used for estimating the efficiency of impact drilling systems and later in rock fall and mill simulations. In the future, with proper consideration for measurement systems and the quantities to be determined, restitution coefficients could represent an important parameter in other research areas of mining engineering such as the prediction of blast-induced vibration, identification and evaluation of excavation systems, and rock classification. The aim of this study is to determine the values of the coefficient of restitution (COR) for various granite samples, which has been attracting the interest of researchers in mining, building, and other such sectors in recent years. Owing to this interest, the results of this study are given within the framework of research in the mining and building industries. Evaluation of the study results indicated that the COR values for various granite samples could be quickly and easily assessed, but differences between the granite samples exist. Linking the reasons for these differences with rock material specifications and forming experimental standards will promote the use of COR as an important classification and/or design parameter in those disciplines such as mining and civil engineering, which are directly interested in rock units.

Summary One of the most important environmental effect and complaint based on blasting activities in mining and quarrying is the hazard occurred in buildings around the mining area. In this paper, the determination criterion for buildings hazards are being carried out, through the use of peak particle velocities, acceleration and frequency obtained from the accelerometers. Within the concept of this research work, the accelerometers have been used in open pit coal mine in Kangal-Sivas aiming to reduce the effects of ground vibrations through the blasting- induced activities. Because of the amplitude of acceleration is greatest then amplitude of velocity. It is reasonable to prefer the accelerometers in for distant areas because the precision of these devices is better in these cases. In this work the peak particle velocities obtained from accelerometers and the hazard criteria refer to in the literature (IS 6922, 1973, USBM RI 8507, 1980, OSM, 1983, DIN 4150 Germany Norm, 1999 and Turkey Regulations, 2008) have been compared.
