Two Australian species of Onthophagus Latreille, O. pranulatus Boheman and O. posticus Erichson have long been recognised as present in New Zealand. More recently attempts were made to introduce Copris incertus Say from Western Samoa and reported here for the first time are records of Epirinus aeneus Wied., from the Cape region of South Africa, apparently established near Christchurch. A key to the New Zealand genera and introduced species of Scarabaeinae is presented.

Palorinae, new subfamily, type genus Palorus Mulsant, is proposed to include Ulomotypus plus nine other genera from outside New Zealand. The subfamily is described and its relationships discussed, the closest other subfamily being Tenebrioninae. Ulomotypus is redescribed in detail. Aphtora is briefly diagnosed and is found to be a primitive member of the Tenebrioninae which cannot be assigned to a known tribe. Demtrius is also briefly diagnosed and is found to be a member of the tribe Titaenini, subfamily Tenebrioninae.

The former family Trachelostenidae is returned to tribal status in Tenebrionidae-Tenebrioninae and reconstituted to include Trachelostenus Solier, 1851 of southern Chile, currently in a separate family Trachelostenidae, Myrmecodema Gebien, 1943 of central Chile, currently in Stenochiinae-Cnodalonini, and Leaus Matthews & Lawrence, 1992 of eastern Australia, currently in Tenebrioninae-Titaenini. The three genera are redescribed in both the adult and larval stages. Three new species: Leaus tropicalis sp.n. L. monteithi sp. n. and L. elusus sp. n. are described. Trachelostenine larval characters are compared with those of related tribes of Tenebrioninae: Titaenini, Heleini, Helopini, Helopinini, Ulomini and Toxicini. The Chilean genus Homocyrtus Dejean is briefly discussed and left incertae sedis in Tenebrionidae. Examination of Lagriola Kirsch (Lagriinae), originally associated with Trachelostenus, leads to the following name changes: Lagriola Kirsch, 1873 = Paratenetus Spinola, 1844, syn. n.; Paratenetus operosus (Kirsch, 1873) (Lagriola), comb. n.; Paratenetus championi, nom. n. for P. denticulatus Champion, 1886 nec P. denticulatus (Kirsch, 1873) (Lagriola) comb. n.

Abstract. Hangaya gen. nov. is proposed to receive H. enigmatica sp. nov. from the south of the Northern Territory, Australia. The new taxon is compared with other known groups and is found to agree with the characteristics of the subfamily Tenebrioninae, but not to agree completely with those of any known tribe in that subfamily.
