In the middle of the growing denial of suffering in contemporary society, death is increasingly banished from the daily reality and confined to hospitals. This study aims to describe an experience of psychological intervention with a patient with acute lymphoid leukemia, a potentially fatal disease, focusing on the monitoring provided throughout their treatment, from diagnosis to lack of therapeutic possibilities, until the moment of his death in a ward of a general hospital in the context of palliative care . The body of the study consisted of the clinical material systematized on the basis of the psychological interventions carried out over a period of two years (2001-2003). An effort was made to understand the phases of mourning experienced by the patient and the possibility of psychological intervention as death approached. The possibility of being present throughout the stages of illness culminating in the moment of death represented a unique and transforming experience both for the patient and for the psychologist who assisted him at the time of his departure..

Loss of β‐cell function hastens deterioration of metabolic control in type 2 diabetes patients. Besides amyloid deposit and glucolipotoxicity, advanced glycation end products (AGEs) acting through their receptors (RAGE) seem to contribute to this process by promoting islet apoptosis. In order to investigate the role of AGEs in β‐cell deterioration, we evaluated the temporal and dose effects of AGE compounds on apoptosis rate, reactive oxygen species generation and expression of pro‐apoptotic and anti‐apoptotic genes in cultured islets.

The patient who will go through a BMT stays in a ward where, besides special care, he needs a full-time caregiver. The diagnosis impact and the decision to have the transplantation done have already weighted, and weighted a lot on this person and now he has to cope with all the responsibility that comes on him. Aiming to relief the caregiver anguish unchained by the BMT process, a psychological supportive group was established, at BMT Unit at Hospital das Clinicas, in Ribeirao Preto (Brazil). In order to describe the group process and check its effects on caregivers, the present study was carried out. The corpus was formed by 40 sessions, developed in a period of six months and having 17 participants. These sessions were transcribed and analyzed in a qualitative approach. Further, a thematic content analysis was applied to the oral report segments. The material was submitted to two, independently, judge evaluation. The results show effectiveness of the group as a psychological support resource, once the group allows caregivers to share their emotions with people who go through similar situation and at the same time they feel understood and supported by the professional staff.
