Multiple neurofibromatosis with oral lesions; review of the literature and report of a case.

Ernest Baden; Harold E. Pierce; Wilbur F. Jack̀son

Abstract The clinical aspects of multiple neurofibromatosis have been discussed briefly, with special emphasis on the oral manifestations of this disease. A case report is presented in which the oral lesions lead to the diagnosis of von Reckling-hausens disease after biopsy and correlation with the general medical examination of the patient. A review of the literature on the oral lesions encountered in multiple neurofibromatosis is presented, which shows the polymorphous character of the oral manifestations involving the oral mucosa, maxillary bones, and nerves. Analysis of the statistical findings give a more objective appraisal of the frequency and distribution of oral lesions which, to this date, has nto bee emphasized in the literature.

Liposarcoma of the oropharyngeal region: Review of the literature and report of two cases

Ernest Baden; Ransford Newman

Liposarcomas of the oropharyngeal regions are exceedingly rare. Their silent, slow growth, submucosal or deep location, circumscription, and firm but resilient texture often suggest a diagnosis of a cyst or benign soft-tissue neoplasm. Two cases of well-differentiated myxoid liposarcoma are presented. The literature of over half a century was reviewed, and all documented cases were critically analyzed. The clinical data correlated with the histopathology and biologic behavior of the tumors indicated that two thirds of all liposarcomas of the head and neck are of the myxoid type. The well-differentiated myxoid liposarcoma was the most common one and has an over-all favorable prognosis. Lipomas of the oropharyngeal regions are relatively common and small, generally not exceeding 2.5 cm. in greatest diamter. A lobulated firm tumor of fast tissue significantly exceeding this size should be strongly suspected of being a liposarcoma.

Hodgkin's lymphoma of the oropharyngeal region: Report of four cases and diagnostic value of monoclonal antibodies in detecting antigens associated with Reed-Sternberg cells

Ernest Baden; Talal Al Saati; Paul Caverivie`re; Bernadette Gorguet; Georges Delsol

In a review of more than 500 cases from the Lymphoma Registry, Department of Anatomic Pathology, University Hospital Purpan, Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France, four cases of primary lesions in the oropharyngeal region were found. There were two lesions in the palatine tonsil, one in the nasopharynx, and one in the parotid gland. The average age of the patients was 54.5 years (range, 37 to 70 years), and all patients were men. The histologic types were lymphocyte predominance (one case), nodular-sclerosis (one case), and mixed cellularity (two cases). The patients were respectively staged as IAa, IIAa, and IIIA. They were treated with radiation, chemotherapy, or both. All four patients are now free of tumor and have been followed from 18 months to more than 6 years after definitive diagnosis and appropriate therapy. Immunohistochemistry significantly contributes to the differential diagnosis of atypical Hodgkins disease from non-Hodgkins lymphomas, especially in extranodal sites. Dako-EMA and Leu-M1 monoclonal antibodies are reactive, respectively, with L and H variants (Dako-EMA+, Leu-M1-) in the lymphocyte predominance type (Type 1) and with Reed-Sternberg cells (Dako-EMA-, Leu-M1+) in the nodular-sclerosis (Type 2), mixed cellularity (Type 3), and lymphocyte depletion (Type 4) types.

Gingival choristoma: Report of a case

Bernard S. Moskow; Ernest Baden

Abstract A case is presented in which both a fully mature sebaceous gland and an accessory mucous gland were found on the gingiva. Both of these structures are considered to be rare in this area of the oral cavity.

Neuroepithelial hamartoma of the oral cavity.

Mayra Mesa; Ernest Baden; Joseph E. Grodjesk; Herbert B. Dolinsky

We report a previously undescribed gingival lesion composed of squamous epithelial islands in close association with bundles of nonmyelinated nerves. A review of the pertinent literature is presented and the histologic differential diagnosis is discussed. We suggest the term neuroepithelial hamartoma for this lesion.
