This study evaluated patient satisfaction at four specialized dental clinics in Recife, Pernambuco State, Brazil. Data were collected through a standardized self-applied individual questionnaire with 272 patients, to evaluate user satisfaction with public dental services. The findings indicated a positive evaluation on most dimensions, except for accessibility. Significant differences were observed between the services on the following dimensions: patient-dentist relationship (p = 0.001); patient-dental assistant relationship (p = 0.007); effectiveness (p = 0.014) accessibility/waiting time (p = 0.018); physical environment/reception room cleanliness (p = 0.004); acceptability (p = 0.029); and effectiveness/tooth appearance (p = 0.029), effectiveness/chewing capacity (p < 0.001). In conclusion, most users were satisfied with the dental care, and satisfaction differed between services.

INTRODUCTION: The spasticity in patients with sequel of stroke causes limitations in activities of daily life and becomes an important risk fator for the development of static deformities if not treated. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of cryotherapy combined with kinesiotherapy to the standard postural flexor and the degree of spasticity of the upper limb of patients with stroke. METHODOLOGY: Seven volunteers participated in this research. The routine of care included the application of ice on the extensor muscles of the wrist and fingers (cryostimulation) for 1 minute and 40 seconds and kinesiotherapy in upper limb spasticity, totaling 10 minutes of action, two times a week during ten sessions. The default posture adopted by the upper limb flexor spastic was evaluated from the goniometry of the wrist joints, metacarpofalangeas and proximal interphalangeal. The first measure bearing was obtained after the arrival of the patient to the session. The second measure occurred after application of cryotherapy and the third after 10 minutes of intervention. The assessment of the spasticitys degree occurred through the Modified Ashworth Scale and implemented before the end of the intervention. RESULTS: The therapy through cryostimulation and kinesiotherapy was efficient in reducing the flexor posture of the upper limb and the degree of spasticity in the three joints, and this effect is observed at each session and at the end of ten sessions. CONCLUSION: However further studies are needed using a larger sample for further clarification of these findings.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Fear of pain may delay or prevent people going to the dentist, especially families assisted by Family Health Strategies. So, this study aimed at investigating pain perception of dental patients from Family Health Units of the city of Caruaru (UFSC), state of Pernambuco. METHOD: This is a transversal, analytical and epidemiological study where socio-demographic data and history of 312 patients were collected through standardized personal interviews. Pain intensity was measured by the 21-point numerical scale (from 0 to 10, with 0.5 intervals), where patients themselves checked the number corresponding to perceived pain during treatment. RESULTS: Pain during treatment was present in 22.1% of the sample and was more frequent in younger patients who only look for the dentist when they feel pain or who always or almost always have felt pain during previous treatments. Mean perceived pain intensity was 4.1 and was statistically higher for patients who usually only look for the dentist when they feel pain. Pain was more frequent during tooth extractions but its intensity has not significantly varied among procedures. CONCLUSION: Pain during USFC treatment was less frequent as compared to other studies, however with higher intensity; and was more frequent among individuals who only look for the dentist when they feel pain.

Purpose : To evaluate the effects of Levodopa on the swallowing of patients with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Methods : The study was carried out in the Pro-Parkinson Program of the Hospital das Clinicas of the Federal University of Pernambuco. Twenty patients with idiopathic PD and 12 normal subjects (control group) were studied. The surface Electromyography (sEMG) was recorded over the suprahyoid musculature during swallowing of 3 ml and 10 ml of water and yogurt. Each volume was repeated five times. This protocol was carried out on the group with PD before and after the medication, off and on periods, and on the control group, a single time. Results : The amplitude of the sEMG was significantly greater for subjects of the control group than for the patients with PD (off), regarding swallowing of each volume of water. The duration of the sEMG was significantly greater for the swallowing of 3 ml of water and yogurt in patients with PD (off). During the on phase, no significant differences were noted. Conclusion : The administration of Levodopa on patients with PD seems to influence the amplitude and duration of the sEMG of suprahyoid muscles, approximating the variables to the values of normalcy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In spite of the relevance of controlling pain during dental procedures and of the fundamental role of Family Health Units in the Brazilian health system, there are few studies integrating both subjects. So, this study aimed at analyzing some aspects of dental anesthesia in Family Health Units of the city of Caruaru-PE. METHODS: We have interviewed 372 adolescent and adult patients from 12 units, in the waiting room or close to it, after dental treatment, using a form with 14 questions. Pain was investigated with a numerical scale of 21 points (0 to 10 with 0.5 intervals). RESULTS: Anesthesia was used in 16.1% of procedures. There has been pain during most anesthesias (58.3%), with intensity of 1±1.2, being more frequent when procedures were in the anterior oral region. For non-surgical invasive procedures, anesthesia was more used in adolescents, in procedures in the posterior oral region, when there was previous pain in the treated region and when the dentist asked patients about their preference. Also for these procedures, pain during treatment as a whole was more frequent and more severe when anesthesia was used. CONCLUSION: Dental anesthesia is rarely used in these units and pain during anesthesia is frequent, however of low intensity. During non-surgical invasive procedures, its use is associated to some characteristics of patients and treatments, but not to a painless or less painful treatment.

PURPOSE:to evaluate the electromyographic parameters of swallowing different types of clinical of idiopathic Parkinson disease on and off phases.METHODS:the study was performed at the Clinic of Neurology, Hospital of the Federal University of Pernambuco. The population of the study were 20 patients with Parkinson disease, divided by Unified Scale for Assessment of Parkinsons disease in three groups: tremor, akinetic-rigid and mixed. The surface electromyography examination was collected on suprahyoid muscles during swallowing and 3 ml water and 10 ml of yoghurt, which was repeated 5 times for each volume and consistency. This protocol was carried out before and after the medication period off and on.RESULTS:it was found that the phase off, akinetic-rigid group had the highest average in parts of swallows and duration of surface electromyography, while the mixed group had the lowest average amplitude. In phase on the three groups tended to improve or maintain the averages of the variables, but there was no significant difference between the clinical types, before or after Levodopa.CONCLUSION:drug therapy through Levodopa shows no consistent differences in surface electromyography of swallowing the clinical types of Parkinson disease.
