This book provides an up-to-date assessment of sustainable agri-food systems and rural development in the Mediterranean countries. It examines and reviews the impact of EU and national policies on environmental and trade issues in agricultural and rural organizations in the southern and eastern Mediterranean region. The book also reflects key socio-economic and political issues such as resource management, income distribution, employment and migration trends, and sustainability aspects. It demonstrates technical and methodological tools used for the analysis and explains their application. The book presents the collective work of a research consortium funded by an EU (FP7) project.

The study analyses the theme of production potential regulation and of the planned abolishment of the planting rights regime considering the constraints defined by the CAP evolution, the current situation of the market, the role in the market of different regions and the structural complexity of the European wine industry. The study, starting from the analysis of the implementation of the planting rights regime across the EU and through an investigation of what could be the effects of the abolishment of the planting rights regime, defines which should be the policies to: a) counterbalance the effects of the liberalization of plantation; b) improve the functioning of the planting rights regime by implementing a new mechanism of functioning.

In the tradition of the French school of agri-business and rural economy, the objective of this chapter is to analyse the challenges and opportunities of the citrus industry in two Maghreb countries: Tunisia and Morocco. This chapter complements Chap. 7 on global value chain analysis, which stressed consumer value as the most important parameter in value chain analyses. The citrus market chains are also associated with a group of innovation chains that contribute to both the technology and competition dynamics in the agricultural or industrial sector. In Tunisia we place emphasis on the analysis of innovation and issues related to biotic stresses. In Morocco we discuss the Green Morocco Plan to discuss the ongoing changes and major reforms to be implemented, with particular attention to the players and their strategies. We conclude on the similarities and differences in these two countries. In both cases, these countries are seeking comparative advantages enabling them to maintain their market shares: higher yields, development of labels, logistics improvement and better organization of the sector.
