Building the knowledge map: an industrial case study

Su-Yeon Kim; Euiho Suh; Hyun-Seok Hwang

Recently, research interest in knowledge management has grown rapidly. Much research on knowledge management is conducted in academic and industrial communities. Utilizing knowledge accumulated in an organization can be a strategic weapon to acquire a competitive advantage. Capturing and representing knowledge is critical in knowledge management. This paper proposes a practical methodology to capture and represent organizational knowledge. The methodology uses a knowledge map as a tool to represent knowledge. We explore several techniques of knowledge representation and suggest a roadmap with concrete procedures to build the knowledge map. A case study in a manufacturing company is provided.

A prediction model for the purchase probability of anonymous customers to support real time web marketing: a case study

Abstract The rapid growth of e-commerce has provided both an opportunity to create new values in the online marketplace and dramatic competition to survive. To survive in a competitive environment, Internet shopping malls attempt to adopt and use Customer Relationship Management. However, previous researches focused on navigation patterns of customers with membership. Therefore, they failed to apply real time web marketing to anonymous customers who navigate web pages without personal login. To overcome the problems noted above, we propose a methodology for predicting the purchase probability of anonymous customers to support real time web marketing. The proposed methodology is composed of two phases: (1) extracting purchase patterns and (2) predicting purchase probability. Purchase pattern provides marketing implications to web marketers while the purchase probability provides an opportunity for real time web marketing by predicting the purchase probability of an anonymous customer. The proposed methodology can be applied to the real time web marketing such as navigation shortcuts, product recommendations and better customer inducement since anonymous customers are included in marketing target and significant navigation pattern for purchase is identified.

Artificial intelligence approaches in model management systems: a survey

Chang-Kyo Suh; Euiho Suh; Dong-Man Lee

Abstract A model management system (MMS) is one component of a generalized decision support system (DSS) architecture which provides for the creation, storage, manipulation and access of models. Several significant research opportunities exist concerning artificial intelligence application for MMS to enhance its major functions. Thus, here the existing literature is surveyed and categorized based its treatment of model representation and model manipulation functions. With increasing use of DSSs by industrial engineers, it is time for industrial engineers to examine what is currently happening in this important area of information technology.

Assessing key knowledge representation techniques for use in HRM problem domains

Dae-Ho Byun; Euiho Suh

Abstract To provide an appropriate expert system development technique which is dependent on a particular domain, selecting the best knowledge representation technique is regarded as one of the most important tasks. We evaluated and selected key knowledge representation techniques confined to human resource management problem domains including planning, selection, placement, compensations, performance evaluation, training and labor-management relations. Two exploratory phases are presented. In the first phase, we scored rules, frames, semantic nets and predicate logic representation techniques in terms of Likerts rating scheme. In the second phase, we prioritized them using the combined Analytic Hierarchy Process.

Membership Reconfiguration in Knowledge Sharing Network: A Simulation Study

Suchul Lee; Yong Seog Kim; Euiho Suh

The purpose of this study is to propose a new approach that minimizes the negative impacts of structural barriers to knowledge sharing in the current of knowledge sharing networks by dynamically reconfiguring communities of practice (CoP) memberships. For this purpose, we develop several propositions to determine source CoPs, destination CoPs, rearrangement candidates, and recipient candidates to regulate the process of reconfiguring collaboration networks of source CoPs and reconstructing networks of destination CoPs after reallocating members from source CoPs to destination CoPs. To test the validity and usefulness of the proposed approach, we simulate two reconfiguration strategies that are different in the sense whether or not the distribution of expertise levels of CoP members is considered to determine the destination CoP. Our experimental results confirm that the proposed approach with either strategy effectively decreases potential threats to collaboration among CoP members and improves the structural healthiness of knowledge sharing networks of departments and organization. In particular, the number of CoPs in which knowledge creating is more active than knowledge sharing is significantly increased while the number of inactive CoPs is decreased. We attribute this finding to the fact that both experts and non-experts members are more evenly distributed across CoPs through rearrangement and these experts with light collaboration burden post their knowledge and practical skills to help non-experts in their CoPs.
