This study aimed to verify the effects of a motor intervention program for students with signs of DCD. Six 10 year-old students, both male and female, who were registered at a municipal school in the interior of the state of Santa Catarina participated in the study. Motor capacity was measured using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC-2), one of the most commonly used instruments for assessing childrens movement difficulties. The test encompasses the age groups of 3 to 16 years; for each age group, eight tasks are grouped into three skill categories: manual skill, throw and catch, balance. The interventions were based on the Developmental Physical Education approach in school environments. The sessions were done individually with 20 motor intervention sessions for each student, in a total of 120 sessions, frequency of two weekly classes with 45 minutes duration. The Wilcoxon test with the statistical package SPSS 13.0 for Windows was used for data interpretation. The results showed statistically significant differences after motor intervention (p <0,05). Regarding the results of motor skill performance, it was found that balance skills presented better improvement results after intervention, revealing that a motor intervention proposal was effective with children with signs of DCD. This study revealed the importance of promoting students with motor disabilities participation in intervention programs in order to monitor their motor development progress, so as to improve movement difficulties both in sports and in daily activities.

PURPOSE: It was to test the validity and reliability of an online version of the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). METHODS: An online version of the FSFI was compared to the pen and paper traditional version. Physiotherapy students in three cities were randomly allocated to two groups - G-pp/ol (n=126) and G-ol/pp (n=147). G-pp/ol women replied to th FSFI using the traditional pen and paper method, while G-ol/pp women answered an online version of the same questionnaire. Data were collected ageing after 15 days, when G-pp/ol women answered the online version while G-ol/pp women answered on paper. All data were transferred to SPSS software. Demographic differences between the test two groups were determined by Students t-test or Fisher exact (95%CI; p>0.05). Association and correlation between the responses of G-pp/ol and G-ol/pp were assessed for each sample by the t-test and Pearsons coefficient. An identical strategy was used for intragroup comparisons. RESULTS: A total of 273 women participated in the study and 28 (10.2%) giving up the second collection. There were no demographic differences between groups. Fifteen of the 19 FSFI questions were associated and correlated between the two groups in both test and the retest. The intragroup analysis revealed that all FSFI questions and scores were associated and weakly correlated for the same group during both test and retest. CONCLUSION: The online version of the FSFI showed acceptable validity and reliability when compared to the paper version, and can justify the choice of this modality, especially in studies involving private questions.

ABSTRACT Purpose: Lower limb lymphedema (LLL) is characterized as a physical-functional chronic complication that impacts the quality of life of women who have gone through treatment for gynecological cancer. The present study aims to check the conservative treatments available for lymphedema after gynecological cancer in the context of evidence-based practice. Methods: The selection criteria included papers from May 1993 discussing treatment protocols used in LLL after treatment for gynecological cancer. The search was performed until October 2014 in MEDLINE, SciVerse, and PEDro using “rehabilitation,” “treatment outcome,” “therapeutics,” “clinical protocol,” “gynecologic surgery,” “lower extremity,” “lower limb,” and “lymphedema” as keywords, focused on women with a previous diagnosis of gynecological cancer who received radiation and/or chemotherapy and/or surgery and/or lymphadenectomy as part of their treatment. Results: From 110 studies found, 3 articles that used the complex decongestive therapy (CDT) as a treatment protocol were selected. There were no randomized clinical trials associated with the conservative treatment of LLL post-treatment of gynecological cancer. The three selected articles are retrospective, and had the same outcome – decreased volume of the affected limb lymphedema. Conclusions: Although LLL is more or as frequent and detrimental as upper limb lymphedema post-cancer treatment, there are only a few studies about this subject. Publications are even scarcer when considering studies with interventional approach. Randomized controlled trials are necessary to support rehabilitation resources on lymphedema post-gynecological cancer treatment.

Purpose The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of time of contraction and rest on the masseter and temporal muscles activity. Methods 49 female subjects between 18 and 30 years of age were divided into TMD (n: 26) and control groups (n: 23). Surface electromyograph was used to evaluate the anterior temporal and masseter muscles during contraction and rest protocols. The root means square, median frequency and slope coefficient of the linear regression line parameters were analyzed. Results A significant effect of time in the contraction and rest muscle protocols was found. TMD patients showed a significant decrease in median frequency in the right masseter muscle and the slope coefficient in the right temporal muscle during the contraction protocol to control subjects. Conclusion Despite the TMD patients presented with higher fatigue susceptibility compared to the control group, both groups must meet the maximum time of 5 s of maximum voluntary contraction and at least 30 s rest between successive contractions of masticatory muscles during clinical or research assessment protocols.

Abstract Introduction : The patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) it is a common problem affecting one in each four people. Alteration in the onset time and intensity of contraction of the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles are considered important factors in the aetiology of PFPS. However, few studies exist about the function of the oblique portion of the vastus lateralis (VLO) and none on the onset time of VLO in functional activities in normal subjects and with PFPS. Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the onset time in the VMO, VLO and VL longus (VLL) muscles during the gait. Materials and methods : Sample was formed by 15 subjects without and 12 with PFPS. Electromyographic data were obtained of the VMO, VLO and VL muscles during treadmill walking with and without inclination. The relative difference in the onset time (DRO) among VMO-VLL and VMO-VLO were determined from the average of 3 strides. Results : There was dif-ference among the subject with and without PFPS in relation to DRO among VMO-VLL. In the subject with PFPS the order at the beginning of the electric activity it was VLL following for VLO and after VMO. In the individuals without the pathology the order was different, first VMO, after VLO and last VLL.

AIMS: The purposes of this study were to characterize and to describe the posture of elderly who practice physical activities. METHODS: Elderly participants of the Third Age Study Group at the Santa Catarina State University, between 60 and 80 years old, who practiced physical activity for at least two days a week, were studied. Data were obtained through computerized photogrammetry using the Postural Assessment Software (PAS/SAPO) in anterior, posterior and side views. Descriptive statistics were performed by using the mean and standard deviation. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 40 subjects, 34 women and six men. Postural characteristics in the anterior view were head rotation, lifting shoulders, scapula and pelvis, and internal rotation of the lower limbs; in the posterior view were right and left valgus hindfoot; and, in the side view, were the head forward, backward inclination of the trunk, hip extension, pelvic anteversion and flexed knees. CONCLUSIONS: Some postural features observed in seniors engaged in physical activity were similar to those found in normal aging. However, inclination of trunk backward and extension of the hip differed from the typical flexor posture of the elderly. We believe that these features are a consequence of physical exercises that promote the strengthening of the extensor muscles, important for maintaining the correct posture.

Abstract Purpose: The aim of this systematic review was to summarize and systematize the information about physical symptoms and its relation with work activity on female Breast Cancer Survivors (BCS). Methods: A systematic search was performed on the databases MEDLINE/PubMed (via National Library of Medicine), SCOPUS (Elsevier), Web of Science (Thomson Reuters Scientific) and CINAHL with full text (EBSCO), including papers about physical impairments experienced by female workers who have had breast cancer. Results: The search retrieved 238 studies, and another 5 were identified in the articles’ references, totaling 243 papers. After removing duplicates and applying the inclusion criteria and a full text reading, 13 articles were included for qualitative analysis. Concerning physical limitations, most complaints were related to the elevation of upper limbs, carrying heavy objects, driving and holding manual movements. The most referred symptoms were breast/arm pain, fatigue, lymphedema, reduced range of motion and weakness in the upper limbs, scar tissue adherence in the breast/axilla and paresthesia in the arm/breast. Conclusion: These symptoms and physical limitations led to the difficulty or impossibility of performing work tasks, which also diminished work productivity, as well as the increase in time to return to work. The present results suggest higher unemployment rates and the need for modifying work conditions. Implication for Rehabilitation Health professionals should include risk assessment at daily routine to identify possible sources of physical impairments for upper limbs. Provide the support and orientations according to personal and job characteristics of the patient. Focus the aims of treatment over upper limbs impairments, reducing the prevalence and the gravity of symptoms.

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers Female Sexual Dysfunctions (FSDs) to be a public health issue. There are a multitude of disorders such as female sexual arousal disorder, hypoactive sexual desire disorder, orgasmic disorder, dyspareunia, and vaginismus. FSDs are detected in 67.9% of the women in the world and are present in 50% of Asians, in 30-50% of Americans, and in 30% of Brazilians. Objective: To systematically review the literature on the different physiotherapy techniques used in the treatment of FSDs. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in the databases EMBASE, PEDro, and MedLine in data as recent as June 2013, by combining words and descriptors of physical therapy treatments and female sexual dysfunctions. Excluded from review were articles concerning male sexual dysfunction, pilot studies, multicentric papers of projects, and those which were either not available in their entirety or were duplicated in another database. After the selection of studies was complete, the randomized clinical trials were scored on the PEDro Evaluation Scale. Results: Eleven articles were included, six of which went on to be qualitatively evaluated on the PEDro scale. The present study followed the methodological structure of PRISMA (Statement for Reporting Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses of Studies). All studies found used questionnaires to assess the effects of physical therapy on FSDs. A total of five different types of interventions were verified: kinesiotherapy (Kegel exercises and pelvic floor muscle training PFMT), Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), biofeedback, electrotherapy (transcutaneous electrical stimulation TENS, and therapeutic ultrasound US), and manual therapy. The limitations found in this systematic review were related to the unavailability of the articles in full and the low methodological quality of the studies. Conclusion: All studies showed improvements in sexual function after physical therapy intervention. There is no consensus on any intervention with better results; however, kinesiotherapy using PFMT proved to be advantageous because of its easy application, low cost, easy learning curve, and lasting results achieved in a short period. However, there are methodological shortcomings that still need to be dealt with to determine the most suitable physical therapy treatment for FSDs, as well as defining the best dosage, the protocol to be followed, and the duration of therapy, as well as the best cost-benefit.The World Health Organization (WHO) considers Female Sexual Dysfunctions (FSDs) to be a public health issue. Introduction Recent studies with Physiotherapy students pointed out for attitudes and conflicting perceptions on their learning process during the phase that precedes the clinical practice. One of those aspects is the human sexuality that appears in the close physical contact that demands Physiotherapists professional practices. Objective To build up the first educational/research instrument that evaluates the knowledge, the comfort and the attitudes of Physiotherapy undergraduate students (SKCAPS). Materials and methods From the literature we extracted three dimensions: knowledge, comfort and attitudes. Initially 50 items were created distributed in the three dimensions that went under the content evaluation, 47 items survived from this process and integrate the first version of SKCAPS. In empiric terms the intern coherence and the reliability of the instrument were tested in 248 students. Results The exploratory factorial analysis carried 37 items in 4 factors that explain 68% of the total variance of the answers of the subjects and that confirmed the proposed dimensions. The dimension comfort became separated in comfort and discomfort. The SKCAPS presented good reliability in terms of intern consistence alpha 0.861. Finally, the instrument was administered to 30 Physiotherapy students for evaluation of clarity following the exclusion of two items that resulted in averages below 8.5. Conclusions With the aim of improve the teaching/learning process, we propose the SKCAPS as the first worth and reliable instrument to evaluate the knowledge, the comfort, the discomfort and the attitudes regard of human sexuality among Physiotherapy students.

Abstract Background: Human sexuality is often treated in a limited way during academic formation, harming knowledge building. The analysis of scientific pro-duction facilitates the understanding of the identity of the research field and points the way forward. Objective: To analyze health scientific production on human sexuality and discuss foci of attention and knowledge gaps. Method: Three electronic da-tabases were consulted: LILACS, PUBMED, SCIELO; and using the keywords “knowledge”, “attitude”, “comfort” and “curriculum” in Portuguese and en-glish. All these were combined with the term “human sexuality”. It included papers published in English and Portuguese in the period between 2000 and 2010. Results: We selected 20 articles from 2022 analyzed. Of the total 50% came from nursing, 45% from medicine and 5% from occupational therapy. 65% of the analyzed articles were published in En-glish and 35% in Portuguese. Conclusion: nursing and medicine produce the largest number of articles related to human sexuality. Although most of the articles analyzed were produced outside of Brazil, the country is increasing its production, showing a growing concern over an area that more and more reveals its importance in health professionals cli-nical practice. Keywords: Scientific Publications; Knowledge; Comfort; Attitude.
