The first step to reduce the incidence of injuries in athletes is to assess the characteristics of occurrence, providing background for the structure and application of prevention programs. This study had the aim to investigate the incidence of injuries in sailing athletes of different technical levels. The sample was composed of 172 sailors, divided in three groups: 89 beginners, participants in the Optimist qualifying of the World Championship (group 1); 29 juvenile sailors, participants in the Youth Sailing Cup (group 2) and 54 national elite sailors, participants in the Pre-Olympic Sailing Week (group 3). The data collection instrument was a mixed questionnaire and the data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Five athletes from group 1 (5.6%); five athletes from group 2 (17.2%) and 15 athletes from group 3 (27.8%) reported some kind of injury related with the modality. Higher incidence of injury was observed in the back and knee and the most reported diagnostic was muscular injury, followed by cuts, sprains and tendinitis. The incidence in sailing is low if compared with other sport modalities, despite the high physical demand required during the actions on the boat. It was verified that the professional athletes, who had higher age mean and time of practice, suffered the most injuries. On the other hand, the lowest incidence was among children and adolescents. Therefore, it is important that prevention programs start from the first years of practice in order to reduce the risk to future outbreaks, especially of chronic nature. Based on this information concerning kinds of injury, we suggest inclusion of exercises specific to musculature conditioning and compensation in the training programs, as well as stretching and relaxation sessions.

PURPOSE: To investigate and compare the acute changes in flexibility of hip extension in athletes of Rhythmic Gymnastics in terms of two stretching techniques: the static stretch and Mulligans Long Leg Traction. METHODS: this is a case study, with a quasi experimental investigation. Participated eight female athletes with an average age of 13.25 years, divided into two groups. Group 1 performed Mulligans Long Leg Traction and Group 2 performed static stretch. Photogrammetry was used to assess the range of motion of hip extension. The range of motion was assessed before the program beginning, before and immediately after each session. The duration of the protocol was six weeks (11 sessions). Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: Initial range of motion of hip extension was 31.38o in the left lower limb and 30.35o in right lower limb. Regarding the acute effects of stretching, the gain in Group 1 (4.73 ± 0.62o and 4.92 ± 0.26o in the left and right lower limb, respectively) was statistically significant superior than in Group 2 (3.42 ± 0.58o in left lower limb and 3.5 ± 0.70o in right lower limb). CONCLUSIONS: With respect to acute changes, Group 1 (Mulligan) had statistically greater gains than Group 2 (static stretching)

CAPOEIRA PARA DEFICIENTES VISUAIS: COMPARAÇÃO DO EQUILÍBRIO ENTRE PRATICANTES E NÃO PRATICANTES DE CAPOEIRA

Janaína barbosa Matos; Fábio Sprada de Menezes

PURPOSE: To compare the balance between visually impaired practitioners of Capoeira and non-practitioners of Capoeira. METHODS: 10 visually impaired individuals (20 to 47 years), chosen on a non-probabilistic intentional, capoeirists n = 5 and n = 5 non capoeirists, submitted to the Berg Balance Scale (BBE) and Falls Efficacy Scale (FES-I). RESULTS: The BBE average points was 55.4 ± 1.34 for capoeirists and 54 ± 1.58 for non-capoeirists, and the average result obtained in the FES-I was 27 ± 7.64 for capoeirists and 35 ± 8.12 for non-capoeirists. CONCLUSION: There were not significant statistic differences in the balance between the two groups, although the capoeirists have had better scores in both tests.Purpose: To compare the balance between visually impaired practitioners of Capoeira and non-practitioners of Capoeira.
