This paper analyses the impacts of the Bolsa Familia Program on the occurrence of child labor and school attendance of children from poor families in Brazil in 2004, according to census and regional areas. A bivariate probit model was used to estimate the statistical tests. The results corroborate the efficiency of the Bolsa Familia to increase the school attendance of children, however, the Program increases the likelihood of occurrence of child labor. Moreover, children of poor households in rural areas have worse conditions than those of urban areas, demanding specific actions to them.

This article analyses salary discrimination against women with higher education in Brazil and Mexico. This study applied two surveys in 2008 that allowed for the construction of analytical categories compatible between the two countries: pnad (Brazil) and enoe (Mexico). Factors that determine gender discrimination in the labor market and its consequences were calculated over the salary differentials using the Oaxaca-Blinder method. The main results show that, for both countries, discrimination is lower among workers with completed higher education than for the rest of the population, although qualified workers show a greater difference relative to other employed groups.

This study aims to verify if the crowding-out effect occurred in Brazilian’s metropolitan regions Brazil during recessions in 1998, 2002 and 2009, under the approach Schult (2005). The results demonstrate that each recession presented peculiarities in the probability of transition from unemployment to employment for individuals. However, the crowding-out effect occurred in 2009. It is also worth to mention that this effect occurred even under a scenario of recession with rising premium for qualification.
