Effect of hydrogen ion implantation on the stability of ODS ferritic steel

Abstract The effect of hydrogen ion implantation on the stability of ODS ferritic steel was studied by means of ion implantation at room temperature and in situ observation in a low voltage electron microscope. The energy and the fluence of hydrogen ion were 50 keV and 1 × 10 21 ions/m 2 , respectively. The results indicated that a certain amount of (Fe, Cr) 2 O 3 phases existed in the original ODS alloy. They did not change observably after hydrogen ion implantation at room temperature. During heating the specimen implanted with hydrogen ions, however, the (Fe, Cr) 2 0 3 phase was dissolved gradually and the non-equilibrium segregation of Cr and C occurred, resulting in the precipitation of Cr carbides. On the contrary, the microstructure of the specimen which was not implanted with hydrogen ions did not change obviously during heating. Neither was (Fe, Cr) 2 0 3 phase dissolved, nor was new phase precipitated.

Synthesis of Beryllium Pebbles Using Plasma Rotating Electrode Process

Beryllium is used as neutron multiplier in the form of a pebble bed. Basic characteristics of the beryllium pebbles are required to the design of blanket. From this point view, production methods and basic characteristics including particle morphology and mechanical properties of beryllium pebbles were investigated. The paper gives a brief description of fabrication technology for the Be pebbles. The Plasma Rotating Electrode Process (PREP) is the method for producing 1–1.2 mm Be pebbles for use as a neutron multiplier. The obtained results indicate the advantages for the fabrication of Be pebbles and the excellent properties of the pebbles.
