Import-export of knowledge between scientific subject categories: The iceberg hypothesis

Vicente P. Guerrero-Bote; Felipe Zapico-Alonso; María Eugenia Espinosa-Calvo; Rocío Gómez-Crisóstomo; Félix de Moya-Anegón

The capacity to attract citations from other disciplines — or knowledge export — has always been taken into account in evaluating the quality of scientific papers or journals. Some of the JCR’s (ISI’s Journal Citation Report) Subject Categories have a greater exporting character than others because they are less isolated. This influences the rank/JIF (ISI’s Journal Impact Factor) distribution of the category. While all the categories fit a negative power law fairly well, those with a greater External JIF give distributions with a more sharply defined peak and a longer tail — something like an iceberg. One also observes a major relationship between the rates of export and import of knowledge.

Binary pathfinder: an improvement to the pathfinder algorithm

Vicente P. Guerrero-Bote; Felipe Zapico-Alonso; María Eugenia Espinosa-Calvo; Rocío Gómez Crisóstomo; Félix de Moya-Anegón

The Pathfinder algorithm is widely used to prune social networks. The pruning maintains the geodesic distances between nodes. It has shown itself to be very useful in the analysis of, amongst others, citations in BIS (bibliometrics, informetrics, and scientometrics). It has even been proposed for the online display of the search results in an information retrieval system. However, its great time and space complexity limits its use in real-time applications and in networks of any considerable size. The present work describes an improved algorithm with considerably reduced time and space complexity. Its lower execution costs thus increase its applicability both in real time and to large networks.

Comparative Analysis of Webometric Measurements in Thematic Environments

Cristina Faba-Pérez; Felipe Zapico-Alonso; Vicente P. Guerrero-Bote; Félix de Moya-Anegón

There have been many attempts to evaluate Web spaces on the basis of the information that they provide, their form or functionality, or even the importance given to each of them by the Web itself. The indicators that have been developed for this purpose fall into two groups: those based on the study of a Web spaces formal characteristics, and those related to its link structure. In this study we examine most of the webometric indicators that have been proposed in the literature together with others of our own design by applying them to a set of thematically related Web spaces and analyzing the relationships between the different indicators.

Seen and heard : duality at the access points to television databases

Jorge Caldera-Serrano; Felipe Zapico-Alonso

Purpose – To show how the double nature of audiovisual material, that it is viewed and referenced, is reflected at the access points of a documentary database.Design/methodology/approach – To achieve this aim a journey through the indexation elements – supported by explanatory examples – is undertaken, so as to identify and analyze onomastic, thematic, geographical and chronological aspects.Findings – The findings reveal the need to identify in indexation the elements viewed in the image track and referenced in the sound track; such a need is supported by user/journalist requests, so that the documentation service is adapted to such information needs.Research limitations – The management method displayed is only valid for medium and large television companies. This derives from the complexity and cost of human resources and time dedicated.Practical implications – The practical value lies in the fact that the best proven structure for indexation of TV audiovisual documents is shown, with this being a usefu...

¿Archivos audiovisuales aún sin digitalizar? seguridad, preservación y amortización

José-Antonio León-Moreno; Felipe Zapico-Alonso; Jorge Caldera-Serrano

This paper aims to show the main problems arising from the lack of digitizing all or part of television audiovisual collections, which contained the more volume to the chain and the greater antiquity is complicated, and at so complex are the documentaries digitizing media. The migration of analog to digital formats is analyzed from various viewpoints such as conservation, safety and integrity documentary, broadcast content, etc., all analyzing the paradigm shift in the television, generated by the changes in the broadcasting and production, and the integration of document management department in the Media Asset Management, which has resulted in the audiovisual collections no longer be contained tank made available to the user and integrated into the heart production system chain.
