Ageism and IT: social representations, exclusion and citizenship in the digital age

Inês Amaral; Fernanda Daniel

The benefits of the introduction of technology in human life may be puzzled with the world evolution. Although the use of technology is limited by geographic, cultural and economic parameters, the benefits for mankind are proved every. However, the movement of globalization promoted by technology also produces new economical and social exclusions. Therefore, an idea of injustice arises. The aim of this paper is to discuss the condition of second-class citizenship of the elderly as a consequence of globalization.

ABSTRACT The Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (EHI) is persistently the most used inventory to evaluate handedness, being neuropsychological investigation and clinical practice. Despite this, there is no information on how this instrument functions in a Portuguese population. The objective of this study was therefore to examine the sociodemographic influences on handedness and establish psychometric properties of the EHI in a Portuguese sample. The sample consisted of 342 adults (157 men and 185 women), assessed with a battery of neuropsychological tests. The mean EHI Laterality Quotient was 63.52 (SD = 38.00). A much high percentage of ambiguous-handedness compared to left-handedness was detected. An inconsistency was found between the preference for formal education activities (writing-drawing-using scissors) and the remaining EHI activities. From sociodemographic variables, only age, area, and regions of residence showed significant influence on EHI scores. The reliability and temporal reliability of EHI were adequate. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated a one-factor model (χ2/df = 2.141; TLI = 0.972; CFI = 0.979; RMSEA = 0.058). The inconsistency between formal education and nonformal activities could be an indicator of social pressure. The present data give support for the notion that handedness measured by EHI is potentially sensitive to sociodemographic and cultural influences.

Cartografia da oferta pública e privada de serviços dirigidos à população idosa em Portugal

Fernanda Daniel; Rosa Monteiro; Jorge Manuel Leitão Ferreira

In this article it is discussed the adequacy of the social responses aimed at the elderly, as an integrating part of the social protection policies in old age. Such policies have been expanding in Portugal since the post-25th-of-April-of-1974 democratization and modernization process. The social responses aimed at the elderly from 1974 on are analyzed. The conclusion is that there are non-coincidences and absences that imply policy redefinition with effective synchronization between social diagnoses and the public service.

Um diagnóstico da desigualdade de gênero num município em Portugal: estruturas e representações

Rosa Monteiro; Luísa Agostinho; Fernanda Daniel

The paper presents a part of the results of an organizational diagnosis with gender perspective, included in a wider project of an Equality Plan in a Portuguese City Counsil. It addressed the issue of gender inequality in two dimensions. Their presence in the structures of human resources, and how their city workers represent the gender (in)equality, expressed in their attitudes regarding gender roles in the public and private spheres. Quantitative analysis was performed both on documents and secondary data provided by the local authority, also on primary data resulted from the application of a questionnaire survey. It was concluded that there are expressions of inequality in phenomena such as occupational and vertical segregation, and that there is a small (ac)knowledgement of the inequality and discrimination phenomena.

Introduction The concepts of well-being and hope are associated with life satisfaction. Public policies should include the promotion of quality of life in the elderly. Objectives The current study sought out to address the concepts of hope and well-being in the elderly, analysing the role of socio-demographic variables. It also aimed to characterize this population in terms of other quality of life indicators such as perception of general health status, loneliness and degree of activity. Method The sample included 130 elderly people, both from the community and institutionalized, with ages between 65 and 94 years old. Participants answered questions about socio-demographic data, quality of life indicators, cognitive functioning and measures of hope (HP; Snyder et al.; 1991), life satisfaction (SWLS; Diener et al, 1985), and positive and negative affect (PANAS; Watson, Clark, & Tellegen, 1998). Results The majority of participants perceived their health status as reasonable and mentioned feelings of loneliness. Only 20% considered themselves active. Men presented higher levels of hope when compared with women. Participants who were not institutionalized showed higher levels of hope and positive affect, considering themselves more active when compared to the ones living in nursing homes or attending day centres. Hope showed to be positively correlated with life satisfaction, positive affect, health status perception and degree of activity, and negatively correlated with negative affect. Negative affect showed to be correlated with the perception of loneliness. Conclusion This study enhances the importance of socio-demographic and psychological variables in the promotion of well-being in the elderly.

The Use of Social Media Among Senior Citizens in Portugal: Active Ageing Through an Intergeneration Approach

Inês Amaral; Fernanda Daniel

Societal narratives arise from shared social constructions that corroborate social discourse about a given subject or object. Social representations endorse the image that society creates about people, objects, and events. The Internet constitutes a world of mediated social interactions, where communication is decontextualized several times for the distribution of disaggregated. Practices within the new social tools demonstrate individual behaviour-based that occurs in online networks. The new computer-mediated communication platforms and social media are used to create bonds and social capital from decontextualized social representations. This paper maps social representations of old age through the appropriation of social media tools, analysed from a digital storytelling perspective across images published in Instagram platform using semantic indexing techniques. A dataset of Instagram images draw through the hashtag #aavoveiotrabalhar, which is connected to an intergenerational active ageing project, will be analysed. The main aims are to identify dominant discourses and to understand if it is possible to generate engagement from the deconstruction of age and gender stereotypes.

Fernanda Daniel; Rosa Monteiro; Sara Antunes; Raquel Fernandes; Pedro Lopes Ferreira

The Contribution of Information Design to Age-Friendly Cities: A Case Study on Coimbra and Public Transport

Maria Luísa Costa; Inês Amaral; Fernanda Daniel

Given the growing and increasing complexity of cities combined with the aging of the population, the World Health Organization launched the “Age-Friendly Cities” initiative, which promotes the suitability of cities for accessibility and inclusion of citizens by meeting their capabilities and needs. This idea stems from the defense of the “right to the city” (Lefebvre, 1995), where daily practices intersect with the representations of space and give rise to the lived area - the representational spaces, where environments constructed by the use of the city take place. In this context, Information Design is fundamental to promote the city as a public space. This paper discusses the relevance of Information Design, Inclusive Design and wayfinding systems in fostering “Age-Friendly Cities”. We present a case study developed in the public transport of the city of Coimbra to understand how the principles of inclusive design are present in the communication with the users.

Optimism and Well-Being Among Institutionalized Older Adults

Helena Espirito Santo; Fernanda Daniel

Institutionalization is often related to the psychologically negative outcomes of old age. Optimism could alleviate suffering, but little is known about its role in institutionalized settings. We sought to explore optimism correlates and to determine whether it predicts emotional well-being variables, after controlling for potential covariates, by assessing 66 institutionalized elderlies. Optimism was low and associated with failure to do physical exercise, urinary incontinence, increased anxiety, depressive symptoms and feelings of loneliness, and reduced satisfaction with life and positive affect. Optimism predicted emotional well-being, albeit not over and above some covariates. Given the low optimism levels and the correlates, we suggest that intrapersonal resources could be intervention targets. It is our hope that our findings will inspire research to analyze interventions promoting optimism-beneficial combinations of well-being among institutionalized older adults.

Propriedades Psicométricas da Geriatric Social Work Competencies Scale II

Fernanda Daniel; Jorge Manuel Leitão Ferreira; Rosa Monteiro

Introduction: The Geriatric Social Work Competencies Scale II (GSWCS II) is considered a reference in the assessment of the competencies of Gero Social Workers. The aim of the study is to examine the psychometric properties of GSWCS II in a sample of Portuguese social workers working with elderly people. Material and Methods: The GSWCS II was administered in conjunction with a specific designed socio-professional questionnaire. A total of 543 social workers were interviewed, with a mean age of 33.05 (7.57 = SD), female (96.1%) and in management functions (72.5%). Results: Internal consistency was verified with high values in all dimensions (α >.9). The scale has high correlations with all its dimensions (>.85). The Confirmatory Factor Analysis was used to test the model, based on a five-dimensional structure, the chi-square test of adjustment (χ2/df) = 3.129 presented an acceptable index of adjustment. Conclusion: The GSWCS II proved to be a valid and reliable scale for this population.
