In this article it is discussed the adequacy of the social responses aimed at the elderly, as an integrating part of the social protection policies in old age. Such policies have been expanding in Portugal since the post-25th-of-April-of-1974 democratization and modernization process. The social responses aimed at the elderly from 1974 on are analyzed. The conclusion is that there are non-coincidences and absences that imply policy redefinition with effective synchronization between social diagnoses and the public service.

The paper presents a part of the results of an organizational diagnosis with gender perspective, included in a wider project of an Equality Plan in a Portuguese City Counsil. It addressed the issue of gender inequality in two dimensions. Their presence in the structures of human resources, and how their city workers represent the gender (in)equality, expressed in their attitudes regarding gender roles in the public and private spheres. Quantitative analysis was performed both on documents and secondary data provided by the local authority, also on primary data resulted from the application of a questionnaire survey. It was concluded that there are expressions of inequality in phenomena such as occupational and vertical segregation, and that there is a small (ac)knowledgement of the inequality and discrimination phenomena.

Introduction: The Geriatric Social Work Competencies Scale II (GSWCS II) is considered a reference in the assessment of the competencies of Gero Social Workers. The aim of the study is to examine the psychometric properties of GSWCS II in a sample of Portuguese social workers working with elderly people. Material and Methods: The GSWCS II was administered in conjunction with a specific designed socio-professional questionnaire. A total of 543 social workers were interviewed, with a mean age of 33.05 (7.57 = SD), female (96.1%) and in management functions (72.5%). Results: Internal consistency was verified with high values in all dimensions (α >.9). The scale has high correlations with all its dimensions (>.85). The Confirmatory Factor Analysis was used to test the model, based on a five-dimensional structure, the chi-square test of adjustment (χ2/df) = 3.129 presented an acceptable index of adjustment. Conclusion: The GSWCS II proved to be a valid and reliable scale for this population.

This study aimed to investigate and interpret the creation of a government mechanism for gender equality from 1970 to 1977 and to explore the key factors and players. The study drew analytically on contributions from the political process and state feminism approaches. The study questions the government mechanisms role in relation to equality, as a function of factors proposed in the literature, e. g., structures for political opportunities and mobilization, conceiving the political results as products of actions by (and interactions between) players in a specific context. A qualitative case study was prepared, focusing on document analysis and the analysis of 53 interviews with key players. The study concludes that the Portuguese political system allowed little room for integration of the gender equality policy agenda, even during the countrys democratization process.
