Th is paper aims to analyse factors associated with low academic performance of gifted students. Th is condition, known as underachievement, is characterized by imbalance between the potential and proven performance in tasks in school and in life. Th e most common factors in the literature are individual or internal -- motivation, self-concept, creativity -- and the external or environmental ones, such as family and school. It is expected that this study help experts, educators and families to recognize the existence of this condition and related factors, so they can off er proper training and educational practices to the needs and characteristics of this subpopulation of gifted students.

El desarrollo del talento en una perspectiva femenina

Several studies emphasize the difficulties faced by the woman who stands out for her superior potential, highlighting the influence of the social and cultural forces on the development and expression of her talent. Reconciling the multiple roles played by women is a major inhibiting factor to the promotion of the female talent. Thus, this essay aims to contribute to a greater understanding of the development of talent in women, and, based on recent investigations, to discuss the factors that facilitate and inhibit an outstanding female performance. Information presented in this article may lead to the development of other studies on female talent and contribute to the development and implementation of programs and services that assist children and adolescents talented as well as public policies aimed at working women.
