The aim of this study was to analyze the work process developed by the oral health teams of the VI Sanitary District of Recife, Pernambuco State, in 2006. It is a descriptive study of qualitative approach in that secondary data were obtained of a previous research accomplished in Recife, where the Sanitary District VI is located. Four semi-structured interviews were accomplished with the oral health coordinator, two surgeon-dentists and a nurse that acted in the Family Health Strategy. The results showed that some practices accomplished by the teams are still incipient such as the epidemic survey, patient reference and counter reference, and the control and evaluation of the actions. However, the progress in the preventive vision and in education practice in the professional health became evidenced through the interviews. In conclusion, in spite of the difficulties for the execution of the practices established by the National Policies of Oral Health, it is noticed a change in the attention model in oral health, being necessary some adjustments and corrections in the activity of the teams, besides a larger participation of other administration levels for the full exercise of oral health in the Family Health Strategy.

OBJECTIVE: to describe the profile and the conduct of public sector, philanthropic, and private phonoaudiologists contracted by the public health authorities in the city of Recife, in the Brazilian State of Pernambuco, with regard to suspected and/orconfirmed cases of domestic violence against children and adolescents between August and October 2008. METHODS: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out with phonoaudiologists from the Brazilian public health service with more than one year of work experience following graduation. The study variables included socio-demographic characteristics, area of work, academic profile and suspected and/or confirmed cases of abuse reported by them and were obtained using a structured questionnaire, subsequently analyzed statistically using the chisquare and Fishers Exact test. RESULTS: of the 89 phonoaudiologists, 43.8% (39)had attended cases of suspected and/or confirmed abuse, with physical abuse being the most frequent kind (35%). Of the 70 cases reported, 2.9% (2) were referred to the appropriate authorities. Most referred the cases to social services or psychologists (34.3%). Around 50% of such patients abandoned treatment. CONCLUSION: the reporting of cases was found to be very low, due, possibility, to lack of information on the part of phonoaudiologists as to the measures to be taken. This suggests that there is a need for professional training to improve the identification of cases of violence and teach phonoaudiologists how to deal with them.

The aim of this study was to analyze the oral health care in Pernambuco state, Brazil, from the available structure and the preventive and curative actions offered by oral health teams, according to population size. For this, structured questionnaires were applied to a sample of 121 oral health teams, which reported on the structure and work process, being used for data analysis using the χ2 and Fisher exact tests. Regarding vocational training, the results showed a higher percentage of dental surgeons with introductory course formation (57.2%) or expertise in family health (46.3%) in big cities, when compared to medium and small size cities (p<0.05). In addition, only 25.4% of the units had a room with sink and mirror for supervised brushing and 48% of teams reported having insufficient amount of educational materials for prevention efforts. It was also noted that collective actions outside school were less often developed by small municipalities. Thus, investments in the team structure and continuous encouraging on education may reduce the differences in oral health care in the cities of Pernambuco.

Objectives: To analyze access to individual dental care developed in the state of Pernambuco, comparing years 2001 and 2009, related to Oral Health Teams in Family Health Strategy. As well, to verify the existence of any inequities in access to dental care, according to geographical region and administrative region. Methods: This descriptive ecological temporal-trend study was performed using secondary data sources, from health care information systems on a national basis. The first dental programmatic appointment was used as the primary care indicator for evaluation of assess to individual dental care. Results: Data analysis showed a significant increase in the number of oral health teams in the state, over the studied years (from 132 teams in 2001 to 1,296 in 2009), representing an increase of 881.82%. Regarding the first dental appointment, an enhancing in coverage was observed (from 10.04% in 2001 to 16.87% in 2009). Conclusions: Despite the positive growth in the first dental appointment indicator, utilization and access to dental services on a programmatic way in primary care still remain low. Numbers indicate relatively low access rates, and reveal that reality of services is far distant from what is constitutionally guaranteed. These results point to the need of rethinking the practice and work to build a system mainly focused on coverage enlargement and on the needs of communities.

Fernando Castim Pimentel; Paulette Cavalcanti de Albuquerque; Raquel Moura Lins Acioli

This work aimed to analyze the coverage of the Program of Environmental Surveillance in Health in the city of Olinda, Pernambuco State and the factors that interfered in not achieving the number of properties established by the National Program of Dengues Control to be visited by the environmental surveillance agents, among them the number of absences and the number of properties worked daily. For the accomplishment of the study, a database was prepared with a list of agents that worked in the year of 2006, considering the number of absences, medical licenses, vacations and the number of worked properties. The results showed that the number of properties worked by the agents per day had a larger influence in the low income presented in the year of 2006 when compared to the number of their absences. The high number of closed properties and refusals, lack of materials, constant training courses and agent demands for other health actions were some factors that contributed to the low productivity of the agents. Therefore, it is necessary a change in the work process of the environmental surveillance agents, as well as a more discerning and constant evaluation of their activities so that it is possible to reach the established goals.
