Tannery effluents are very dangerous for the environment since they contain large amounts of dangerous and biorecalcitrant contaminants (organic matter and Cr(VI)). This paper reports the efficiency of heterogeneous photocatalysis, based on the application of solar and artificial radiation, furnished by UV lamps, using TiO2 fixed on a flat plate, in the treatment of synthetic effluents. The results of COD and Cr(VI) demonstrate that the use of solar radiation is the most efficient way to perform the photocatalytic treatment of these effluents since a minimum removal of 62 and 61% was observed for Cr(VI) and organic matter, respectively.

The industry is one of the most polluting sectors of the aquatic ecosystem. Conventional treatment methods no longer have full effectiveness. The heterogeneous photocatalysis, using TiO2 as the semiconductor (photocatalyst) is one of the most promising techniques for polishing industrial effluents. In the present study determines the best pH range, to optimize the phenomenon of adsorption, and evaluates the reduction of hexavalent chromium and the removal of organic matter in synthetic samples, using a reactor with glass plate impregnated with TiO2 and making use of solar radiation. It was observed that the acidic pH is optimal for the photocatalytic process and that there was a minimum removal efficiency of 62% and 60% for Cr (VI) and organic matter, respectively.

Biodiesel effluents were treated via photo-Fenton oxidation absorbing sunlight through a catalytic reactor connected to a stand-alone photovoltaic system, decreasing of almost 34% the biodiesel contaminants while storing energy to aid the whole process.
