The flow characteristics of the plunging water jets can be defined as volumetric air entrainment rate, bubble penetration depth, and oxygen transfer efficiency. In this study, the bubble penetration depth is evaluated based on four major parameters that describe air entrainment at the plunge point: the nozzle diameter (DN), jet length (Lj), jet velocity (VN), and jet impact angle (θ). This study presents artificial neural network (ANN) and genetic expression programming (GEP) model, which is an extension to genetic programming, as an alternative approach to modeling of the bubble penetration depth by plunging water jets. A new formulation for prediction of penetration depth in a plunging water jets is developed using GEP. The GEP-based formulation and ANN approach are compared with experimental results, multiple linear/nonlinear regressions, and other equations. The results have shown that the both ANN and GEP are found to be able to learn the relation between the bubble penetration depth and basic water jet properties. Additionally, sensitivity analysis is performed for ANN, and it is found that DN is the most effective parameter on the bubble penetration depth.

AbstractSide-weirs have been widely used in hydraulic and environmental engineering applications. Side-weir is known as a lateral intake structure, which are significant parts of the distribution channel in irrigation, land drainage, and urban sewerage system, by flow diversion device. Local scour involves the removal of material around piers, abutments, side-weir, spurs, and embankments. Clearwater scour depth based on five dimensional parameters: approach flow velocity (V1/Vc), water head ratio (h1–p)/h1, side-weir length (L/r), side-weir crest height (b/p) and angle of bend θ. The aim of this study is to develop a new formulation for prediction of clear-water scour of side-weir intersection along curved channel using Gene Expression Programming (GEP) which is an algorithm based on genetic algorithms (GA) and genetic programming (GP). In addition, the explicit formulations of the developed GEP models are presented. Also equations are obtained using multiple linear regressions (MLR) and multiple nonlinea...

Flood disasters continue to occur in many countries around the world and cause tremendous casualties and property damage. Flood peak values are required in the design of bridges, culvert waterways, spillways for dams, and estimation of scour at a hydraulic structure. When a flood wave passes through a reservoir its peak is attenuated, and the time base is enlarged due to effect of storage. Modification in the hydrograph is studied through flood routing. Flood routing is the technique of determining the flood hydrograph at a section of a river by utilising the data of flood flow at one or more upstream sections. Advances in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) offer opportunities for utilising new algorithms and models. Experiments have shown that the gene-expression programming (GEP) model and its algorithms are 100–60 000 times faster than older genetic algorithms. This study presents the GEP method, which is an extension to genetic programming, as an alternative approach to modelling of flood routing in natural channels. Thus, novel models for prediction of flood routing using the GEP technique are developed. The proposed GEP-based approach is compared with three hydrograph examples and the results of other solution techniques. The GEP method makes use of few hydrologic parameters (inflow, outflow, and time). The performance of the models is evaluated by two goodness-of-fit measures, namely, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) and the coefficient of determination (R). In the results, the GEP models show superior performance to the other solution techniques based on the Muskingum model.

The conducted clinical and instrumental study revealed that the aggregate group of the patients with chronic diseases of throat differs by increased frequency of isolated and combined disorders of gastrointestinal tract. If a patient has such symptoms as hoarseness, tickling, scratching, burning, feeling of dryness in throat, frequent variant of gastro-intestinal tract disorders is gastroesophageal reflux disease with pharyngolaryneal reflux. There are such severe pathologies of throat as pachydermia of vocal cords and nodules of vocal cords among more frequently met disorders at gastro-intestinal tract diseases. High probability of accompanied pathology of throat in the form of pachydermia and nodules of vocal cords at patients with gastro-intestinal tract disorders stipulates for the necessity of conducting fibrorhynolaryngoscopy in combination with fibergastroscopy.Study presents short overview of drug situation’s indicators during the first, or heroin decade of drugs, and then during the second, soft and synthetic drugs decade of drugs in Slovakia. Then the results of series of nation-wide school surveys, mapping development of licit and illicit drugs use among children and youth during nineties are outlined. The results indicated constant growth of licit and illicit drugs consumption among primary school pupils, and secondary school students until the fourth wave of nation-wide school surveys in the years 2006 – 2007. However, the next wave after four years has detected profound change in the expected pattern of further growth in the case of illicit drugs. Instead of this decline of use or at least stabilization occurred among Slovak youth. At the same time we have found growth of use in the case of licit drugs – alcohol and tobacco, more profoundly among girls. Also the use of new synthetic drugs among young people was revealed via traditional school survey.
