Testing the Schumpeterian Hypotheses on an Open Innovation Framework

Francesco D. Sandulli; Jose Fernandez-Mendez; Antonio Rodríguez-Duarte; José Ignacio López-Sánchez

The purpose of this paper is to explore the unclear relationship between industry structure and Open Innovation. The focus of the study is on firms that received external help to develop their products or that helped third parties in developing their products. The hypotheses were tested on a large panel of more than 7,000 firms using Generalized Estimating Equations. The results show that Open Innovation adoption is positively related to technology complexity and market uncertainty while it is negatively related to market concentration. Larger firms are more likely to adopt Open Innovation strategies. The research makes an important contribution to the literature by examining on a large sample of firms the moderating effects of industry concentration, industry research and development intensity and the technology life cycle stage on the adoption of Open Innovation.

The Two Sides of Open Business Models

Francesco D. Sandulli; Henry Chesbrough

Traditional closed business models have recently shown their limitations. In this paper we explore the role of key resources, and how they can be aggregated into open business models. We first examine how the nature of key resources influences the development of these models. We pay particular attention to whether the resources are rivalrous or non-rivalrous, and whether they are excludable or not. We outlined to the two faces of open business models, considering the buy side and the sell side of how resources are accessed and leveraged respectively in such models. We examined one organization in more detail, the El Bulli restaurant, to provide an indepth illustration of both sides of that firms business model, and show its adaptability.

68 Cents per Song A Socio-Economic Survey on the Internet

Francesco D. Sandulli; Samuel Martín-Barbero

This article tries to find out how much and why the users of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks may be willing to pay for a digital song at online music stores, when they can also download songs for free via these networks. Based on a sample of more than 4000 Spanish P2P users, the empirical research reveals how a perceived greater value and a more intensive prosecution policy of copyright violations will boost their willingness to pay for online music.

R&D resources and diversification: controlling for indirect diversification and endogeneity

José Ignacio López-Sánchez; Beatriz Minguela-Rata; Antonio Rodríguez-Duarte; Francesco D. Sandulli

This work studies the impact of technological innovation activities on the diversification strategy of the firm. This work contributes to the research on this field controlling for the endogeneity of the patenting and diversification decisions. Moreover, it improves previous research by measuring not only direct but also indirect diversification. On the basis of a sample of 983 industrial Spanish firms, the results show that innovation drives diversification, while diversification does not influence innovation decisions.

Harley Davidson's Brand Identity on the Web: A BIWAM® Filtering

Samuel Martín-Barbero; Francesco D. Sandulli

ABSTRACT This research applies the Brand Identity Web Analysis Method (BIWAM)®, a novel form of qualitative analysis, to compare the online brand identity of two motorbike manufacturers: Harley Davidson and Triumph. Results show Harley Davidson has a stronger web brand identity. However, some facets of its brand communication strategy need to be improved. These include better adaptation to internet-specific characteristics and improvement in the online relationship with customers.

Effects of multi-functional new product development teams and overlapping approach on development time: an empirical study

Beatriz Minguela-Rata; Francesco D. Sandulli; José Ignacio López-Sánchez; Antonio Rodríguez-Duarte

This paper studies the influence of basic principles of concurrent engineering (autonomous multi-functional teamwork and execution of activities under an overlapping approach) on development time. A linear regression model was performed on a sample of electronic components manufacturing firms in Spain. Results seem to indicate that both autonomous multi-functional teams and execution of activities under an overlapping approach is related positively with shorter development times.

User-led innovation: final users’ involvement in value cocreation in services industries

Francesco D. Sandulli

There is widespread consensus among practitioners and scholars alike that end-users can contribute substantially to create new goods and services. Service firms are starting to learn how to involve end-users in the development of new services. Overall, in the case presented in this chapter we see how a company adopted a more open strategy in developing new services. The firm purposely reduced information stickiness by increasing the degrees of interaction between the firm and the end-user and by providing end-users with tools to develop their own applications. The firm also increased the visibility of the implicit benefits of user contributions, reinforcing the organizational identification process by creating a reputational system. These initiatives resulted in better capabilities to detect and filter user demands, but also in greater differentiation from competing investment firms by offering a richer portfolio of services and better analysis and information processing capabilities to end-users.

The present paper studies intrinsic characteristics of teams for new products development (characteristics of team members, characteristics of project leader, management support, autonomy degree, and multifunctional degree), as well as the difference in these characteristics between teams for incremental innovations and teams for breakthrough innovations. In order to do that, a sample of Electronic Components manufacturing firms in Spain was analyzed. We took the new product development project as analysis level.
