This chapter examines an intervention that sought to help participants identify their emotions and their influence on their relationships in order to develop more assertive forms of communication and positive interpersonal relationships that promote well-being. Participants are 100 adolescent from two public schools of a south Brazilian city, aged from 10 to 14 years old (M = 12.18, SD = 1.39), 50.7% boys. They were divided in two groups according to a pre-test results: adolescents with lower well-being rates were allocated in the experimental group (n = 48) and those with higher well-being rates in the control group (n = 52). The intervention addressed family, school and community relationships, focusing on identifying and managing emotions and empathy. The results and the intervention process were assessed using qualitative and quantitative methodologies. We used the responses given by the participants during the intervention, field diary made by researchers, questionnaires with open-ended questions and scales for the assessment. The questionnaires were applied at three time points: before the intervention (pre-intervention), immediately after the intervention (post-intervention) and 30 days after the intervention (follow-up). The results show that in general participants demonstrated difficulty in identifying feelings. The participants’ closest relatives are mothers, fathers and siblings, who were associated with positive feelings and sense of security. Participants demonstrated awareness of what could be done to improve the quality of their relationships with peers and teachers, even if they did not act upon it. The assessment shows that the intervention encouraged reflections on relationships and emotional competence.

Abstract The purpose of this article is to investigate the relationship between the subjective well-being of children and their environmental attitudes, as well as their environmental satisfaction. A total of 1,746 Brazilian children (53.5% girls) took part in this study, aged between eight and 13 (M = 10.17; SD = 1.49). Hierarchical regression analyses were carried out, using the Personal Well-being Index — School Children as the dependent variable, and socio-demographic data, items from the Environmental Attitudes Scale for Children (EAAN) and the Scale for Environmental Satisfaction among Children (EISA) as the independent variables. The results indicated that 12% of variance in well-being was explained by five items from the EAAN scale and by the city of residence. A further 14.9% was explained by five items on the EISA scale and by the variables city and age. The presence of environmental attitudes, talking to parents about environmental issues, cleanliness of their school and contact with animals and nature are some of the predictors of well-being, along with living in towns and cities inland. The study supports the consideration of environment as an indicator of well-being among children.

This chapter examines an intervention with children aiming to promote wellbeing through the sense of community and the contact with nature. A total of 100 adolescents aged 10–14 years old (M = 12.18, SD = 1.39) from two public schools in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) participated in this study, 50.7% boys. They were divided into two groups according to the pre-test results: children with lower wellbeing rates were placed in the experimental (intervention) group (n = 48) and those with higher wellbeing rates in the control group (n = 52). The intervention was carried out using activities that sought to promote the identification of neighbourhood resources, classmates who live in the neighbourhood and the presence of nature in home and school surroundings; to encourage the contact with nature in these environments and to discuss about preserving nature in the neighbourhood. The assessment is qualitative and quantitative and made from materials produced during activities, through field journals and questionnaires with open-ended questions and scales answered at three different time points: before the intervention (pre-intervention), immediately after the intervention (post-intervention) and 30 days after the intervention (follow-up). The quantitative results are moderate in relation to the effect of the intervention, while the program impact was not statistically significant. Qualitatively, children showed development of their repertoire in relation to the resources and places to enjoy around the neighbourhood. Participants preferred locations are the outdoor spaces and they showed dissatisfaction with the lack of safety and depredation of the neighbourhood.
