This paper studies the inter-linguistic and intercultural comparability of subjective wellbeing during adolescence, as well as school satisfaction as a component of this well-being, using samples of 12 to 16-year-old from Brazil (n=1588), Chile (n=843) and Spain (n=2900). As subjective well-being indicators, two versions of the PWI (Cummins, Eckersley, van Pallant, Vugt, and Misajon, 2003) were adopted, one measuring well-being with different life domains, a single-item scale on overall life satisfaction (OLS). The six items on satisfaction with different facets of the school life, used by Casas et al. (2013), were included as subjective indicators of school satisfaction. The original version of the PWI (PWI7) and a longer version with 10 items (PWI10) are used. Both versions show a good fit in Confirmatory Factor Analysis using the pooled sample. Using multiple regressions analysis and Structural Equations Modelling (SEM), different options are considered and analyzed in order to estimate the most appropriate model to compare subjective wellbeing cross-countries, with school satisfaction included. An analysis of the results indicates that two multi-group SEM, which include the six items on satisfaction with different facets of school life related to a latent variable, and also related to latent variables PWI7 and PWI10, respectively, show good comparability between countries. Multiple regression analysis suggests that the most useful synthetic indicator on satisfaction with school life is satisfaction with your life as student. When this item is included in PWI7 or PWI10, internal consistency of each of the scales (PWI8 and PWI11) improves, and the respective multi-group SEM of these two psychometric scales show that variances, covariances and regressions are comparable between the three studied countries. This was not the case with the overall mean indices, which is probably due to the different answering styles of adolescents in each country.

AbstractThe aim of this paper is investigate the environmental behavior in children (8 to12 years old) of the south of Brazil. In a quantitative stage (n = 1719) the Children’s Environmental Behavior Scale was applied and the environmental behavior was compared considering age, place of residence, sex and school (public or private). In qualitative stage, focus groups were conducted to investigate the children’s comprehension about the topic. The resuls showed that girls tend to exhibit more environmental behavior, as well as the youngest, those who live in small cities and those from public schools. The results showed that the environmental concern leads to activism environmental behavior.

Motivation interferes in the way people interact and relate with others. In this study we focus on the motivation in the use of ICT in education. We explore translation, adaptation and validation of EMITICE Scale based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT). The study has been made in two phases: (1) translation, adaptation and pilot testing (N = 91), (2) field test and validation (N = 466) with distance learning Brazilian students, aged 18 to 61 (M = 34.48, SD = 9.56), 171 men (36.7%). This study used bilingual referees, translations synthesis, expert committee and backtranslation. Pearson correlation, confirmatory factor analysis and internal consistency show that EMITICE is valid and reliable. The CFA shows adequacy model and good internal consistency (α = 0.84). The results reinforce psychometric qualities of scale indicating its applicability in studies of motivation in the use of ICT thus becoming an instrument theoretically and empirically grounded useful for scientific research.

Childhood, environment and subjective well-being / Infancia, ambiente y bienestar subjetivo

Francielli Galli; Jorge Castellá-Sarriera; Lívia Maria Bedin

Abstract The purpose of this article is to investigate the relationship between the subjective well-being of children and their environmental attitudes, as well as their environmental satisfaction. A total of 1,746 Brazilian children (53.5% girls) took part in this study, aged between eight and 13 (M = 10.17; SD = 1.49). Hierarchical regression analyses were carried out, using the Personal Well-being Index — School Children as the dependent variable, and socio-demographic data, items from the Environmental Attitudes Scale for Children (EAAN) and the Scale for Environmental Satisfaction among Children (EISA) as the independent variables. The results indicated that 12% of variance in well-being was explained by five items from the EAAN scale and by the city of residence. A further 14.9% was explained by five items on the EISA scale and by the variables city and age. The presence of environmental attitudes, talking to parents about environmental issues, cleanliness of their school and contact with animals and nature are some of the predictors of well-being, along with living in towns and cities inland. The study supports the consideration of environment as an indicator of well-being among children.

Psychosocial Well-Being of Children and Adolescents: Intervention Effect and Impact Evaluation

Jorge Castellá Sarriera; Lívia Maria Bedin; Miriam Raquel Wachholz Strelhow; Javier Morales Sarriera

This chapter presents the implementation and evaluation of an intervention program regarding adolescents’ well-being, based on theory and research. The intervention was carried out using a quasi-experimental design, with one pre and two post-tests (immediately after – post-test, and 1 month after – follow up). Participants are 100 adolescents from two public schools in a south Brazilian city, aged from 10 to 14 years old (M = 12.18, SD = 1.39), of which 50.7% are boys. They were divided into two groups according to the pre-test results: adolescents with lower well-being rates were assigned to the experimental group (n = 48) and those with higher well-being rates were assigned to the control group (n = 52). The intervention was performed during school period throughout 1 week. The instrument was a questionnaire composed by the Personal Well-Being Index, and items related to indicators in each module. Analyses of variance for repeated-measures were performed (ANOVA-RM) within the experimental group to assess the intervention effect, and regression discontinuity analysis (RD) to assess the intervention impact by comparing the experimental and control groups. Results indicated that there was an increase in children well-being in the experimental group in the post-test; however, that positive effect disappears in the follow up assessment. The RD analyses showed significant differences between the control and experimental groups in the post-test, demonstrating a positive impact of the intervention. However, there were no differences between pre and follow up assessments, resulting in no lasting impact in the long term.

A Multidimensional Approach to Well-Being

Jorge Castellá Sarriera; Lívia Maria Bedin

This chapter begins by presenting paradigmatic changes in recent years, related to ecological and complexity theories. Within this context, on the one hand, the studies on Multidimensional Well-Being that were developed in recent years (2011–2016) in Europe and the United States are included, observing the evolution of theoretical and dimensional aspects, as well as the instruments developed in the multidimensional approach. On the other hand, the analysis of Latin American studies brings to the front the need to overcome the limitations of traditional methods of assessing well-being and poverty that are generally income-based, and tend to neglect the fact that individuals experience well-being as entire human beings and not as fragmented humans. The authors propose a model of Multidimensional Well-Being, based on the dimensions of subjective, psychological, psychosocial and socio-community well-being. The indicators of each dimension are developed based on the empirical literature and research carried out by the authors and the Research Group in Community Psychology, UFRGS (Brazil). The impact of social and economic determinants in situations of social inequality and poverty is discussed, as well as the psychological and psychosocial effects that these conditions have on people in these contexts. New studies are needed to contrast the proposed Multidimensional model, as other models may emerge that integrate physical, psychological, psychosocial, social and community aspects.
