CEP - Brazi/ian Postal Code - can be used to describe locations. The Postal Code Atlas extracts bidimensional proporties from CEp, presenting the boundaries of brazilian postal regions; state of Sao Paulo Subregions, and state of Sao Paulo countryside sectors. Georeferenced information take part in decision making and implementation. This article describes how the Postal Code Atlas is being developed and offers an example of practical app/ication.

When adopting new technologies, the issue is not always the availability of resources, but the possibility of access to adequate information and the ability to use new analytical reference sets. When Geographic Information Systems are applied to the treatment of addresses for Database Marketing, it is necessary to view addresses as the autonomous entities they really are, rather than consider them mere client attributes. This line of action greatly reduces the effort involved in address matching.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become available for desktop computers; they are extremely useful for Database Marketing activities and allow data analysis virtually unfeasible with other tools. Their application, however, depends on the existence of maps and data potentially expensive and difficult to obtain. Geographic Information Systems usage will become popular in Brazil in the next two years.

Potential consumption indexes are indirect measurements of the capacity of a region to absorb a certain product category. A linear regression method can be used to prepare a simple and robust index with results comparable or superior to those that can be obtained with indexes sold by consulting businesses. This fact usually goes unobserved because in most cases no efforts are made to check if the indexes really reflect the reality that they supposedly describe. To establish a methodology and prove the above hypothesis, data about supermarket floor space is collected for the “municipios” (counties) of the State of Sao Paulo, an index is prepared and then compared to other indicators. Results validate initial hypothesis.

Indirect cooperation can be applied to library circulation transactions to generate suggestions of items relevant to patrons and researchers. The Recommendation System presented in this article uses the Cluster Analysis and the Market Basket Analysis. It can be used not only in libraries but also in virtual bookshops, and can be easily adapted to practically any kind of e-business enterprise.

In modeling market potential with simple and multiple regression, unsatisfactory results are frequently obtained due to the presence of spatial autocorrelation in the data. The Geary’s Ratio can identify and measure the intensity of this phenomenon. The concept of autocorrelation substantially improves the performance of a model to estimate supermarket floor space in Sao Paulo state counties.
