For the first time, the realization and the performance of a compact optoelectronic 32-SOA module including their drivers is reported. Preliminary experiments in an optical packet switching matrix for IP multi-terabit router is also reported.

Summary form only given. Recently, arrays of four clamped gain semiconductor optical amplifiers (CG-SOAs) which were fully packaged have been reported with excellent performances using bulk tensile strained active material. Here we believe we present for the first time subnanosecond switching of such a four CG-SOA array driven by integrated InP HBT drivers.

In this paper, we demonstrated the physical feasibility of a transparent waveband-based DWDM metropolitan ring network with 10 nodes and different fiber spans between nodes. it operates at 32 /spl times/ 10 Gbit/s per fiber over up to 155 km TeraLight/spl trade/ Metro fiber in an experiment which is representative of a real metropolitan network. Such a network is cost effective thanks to demultiplexing and switching cost sharing between the wavelengths gathered in wavebands, thanks to amplification cost sharing between nodes (one double-stage EDFA for two nodes is achievable), and thanks to TeraLight/spl trade/ Metro fiber which avoids to use dispersion compensated fibre (DCF) modules for more than 150 km of transmission.

We present for the first time a physical validation of an all-optical packet-switched network. More than 40 network sections, including 100 km of fibre and one optical packet switching node, have been cascaded with negligible sensitivity penalty at 10 Gbit/s.

We report here on an 8 CG-SOA gate array with uniform characteristics for WDM large-scale space switches operating at 1550 nm. The mean fiber-to-fiber gain and noise figure n/sub sp//C/sub 1/ yield 19 dB and 6.6 dB at 200 mA, respectively.

SOA-based devices provide a family of key components for optical networks, including wavelength conversion, regeneration, space switching and wavelength selection. All these functions require integration of multiple SOAs that calls for efficient combination of monolithic and hybrid integration to reach performances and cost effective solutions. Several examples are presented and discussed.

In this paper, we present a high performance, versatile multifibre pigtailing technique adapted to tilted semiconductor optical amplifier arrays. Dynamic alignment of collectively processed tilted lensed ribbon fibre and YAG laser welding assembly are used for pigtailing of 4 clamped gain semiconductor optical amplifier array. The collective process makes this packaging technique attractive for array components. This paper describes the technology used and summarizes main results obtained on fabricated modules.

We demonstrated a 40 km passive optical metro-access ring (POMAR) including 5 nodes able to carry up to 2/spl times/(16/spl times/2.5) Gbit/s without amplification. An original 1+1 protection scheme based on bi-directional fibers was implemented, not limited by the Rayleigh back scattering.

We report on the first Clamped Gain semiconductor optical amplifier array module. The optical gain and the output saturation power are respectively 13.2 ± 1dB and 10 dBm.
