The aim of this article was to evaluate the oral health knowledge of pedagogy students from the Federal University of Paraiba. In order to do this students present in class rooms answered a questionnaire containing the objective requirements relative to basic knowledge on the subject. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics techniques. Out of 100 students, 83% have had access to information relating to Preventive Dentistry. The most quoted source of information was the dentist (64%). Aspects relating to bacterial plaque were generally not known by the participant group (31%), in contrast to the etiological factors that cause dental caries (55%). Although 92% of the students stated that pacifiers are harmful to the facial development of children, only 9% could identify the age limit for abandoning use of this article. Furthermore, 20% selected the ideal time for the first visit of a child to the dentist. It can be concluded that the students had a reasonable knowledge of oral health. The promotion of educational programs directed at these professionals is needed, particularly in the academic curriculum, since these professionals of the future will contribute to the children’s formation, by establishing daily practices that lead to good health.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Temporomandibular disorders are highly prevalent and may impair several oral function- related aspects. This study aimed at evaluating the impact of the presence and severity of temporomandibular disorder signs and symptoms on oral health-related quality of life. METHODS: Participated in the study 135 dentistry students of the Federal University of Paraiba. The presence of temporomandibular disorder was determined by means of an anamnesis questionnaire and a summarized clinical evaluation protocol. Oral health-related quality of life was determined by the summarized Oral Health Impact Profile version translated and validated for the Portuguese language. Statistical comparisons between Oral Health Impact Profile-14 means related to the presence of temporomandibular disorder signs and symptoms were achieved with Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests. RESULTS: Volunteers with temporomandibular disorder (p<0.001), needing treatment (p<0.001) and higher severity (p<0.001) had higher impact on oral health-related quality of life. Volunteers with clinical temporomandibular disorder signs had further quality of life impairment, being that individuals with simultaneous muscle and joint temporomandibular disorders (p=0.034) had higher Oral Health Impact Profile-14 scores. Most impaired domains were physical pain (p=0.045), functional limitation (p=0.007) and psychological discomfort (p=0.045). CONCLUSION: Temporomandibular disorder severity has negative impact on quality of life, especially in volunteers with simultaneous joint and muscle clinical signs.

Objective: To evaluate fluoride concentration levels in water samples from wells, cisterns, and bottled waters marketed in the municipality of Campo Alegre de Lourdes (BA). Methodology: In the urban area, samples from cisterns were collected at home. Bottled waters were acquired in the markets. Were collected samples from 11 cisterns, 02 wells and 07 bottled waters. In the rural area, 18 samples from cisterns were randomized. Results: Fluoride concentrations in the cisterns water evaluated ranged from 0.08 to 0.48 ppmF. The highest concentration of fluoride was 0.24 ppmF. Most samples of bottled waters did not disclose fluoride concentration in their labels. Fluoride concentration in the wells ranged from 0.03 to 0.27 ppmF. Concerning to rural area, the highest concentration of fluoride in the water was found in Arroz (0.51 ppmF) and the lowest in Barra (0.03 ppmF). Conclusion: The fluoride concentration present in sources of drinkable water in the city provides no risk to consumption, and may be ingested by children during dentition development. Contrariwise, water did not reach a fluoride concentration capable of acting in the prevention of dental caries. DESCRIPTORS: Water Quality Control. Fluoride Poisoning. Bottled Water. The aim of this work was to determine the natural fluoride concentrations in public water supplies in Piauí State, Brazil, in order to identify cities in risk for high prevalence of dental fluorosis. For each city, two samples of drinking water were collected in the urban area: one from the main public water supply and another from a public or residential tap from the same source. Fluoride analyses were carried out in duplicate using a specific ion electrode and TISAB II. From a total of 222 cities in Piauí, 164 (73.8%) samples were analyzed. Urban population in these towns corresponds to 92.5% of the whole state with an estimated population of 1,654,563 inhabitants from the total urban population (1,788,590 inhabitants). A total of 151 cities showed low fluoride levels (<0.30 mg/L) and 13 were just below optimum fluoride concentration in the drinking water (0.31-0.59 mg/L). High natural fluoride concentration above 0.81 mg/L was not observed in any of the surveyed cities. As a conclusion, most of the cities in Piauí have low fluoride concentration in the drinking water. The risk for a high prevalence of dental fluorosis in these urban areas due to natural fluoride in the water supplies is very unlikely. Thus, surveys about the dental fluorosis prevalence in Piauí should be related with data about the consumption of fluoridated dentifrices and other fluoride sources.

Introduction The role of occlusion as an etiologic factor of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) has been polemic and still controversial. Objective To evaluate the correlation between signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders and severity of malocclusion. Method A total of 135 undergraduate dental students from Federal University of Paraiba were evaluated. The presence of TMD was estimated by Fonsecas Anamnestic Index and objective questions about symptoms were addressed. Students were also submitted to a summarized protocol for clinical evaluation of TMD. The evaluation of occlusal factors was performed using the Treatment Priority Index (TPI) applied to plaster casts corresponding to upper and lower dental arches. The differences between the means of IPT related to signs and symptoms of TMD were determined by t tests and One-way ANOVA. Correlations between occlusal factors and TMD were determined by Pearson correlation. Result According to the TPI, the severity of the malocclusion did not influence the onset of TMD, muscle or joint clinical signs and need for treatment. Class II malocclusion, marked overbite and rotated teeth were statistically correlated with the need for treatment and clinical signs of TMD. Conclusion In multifactor models as in the pathophysiology of TMD, occlusion can play a role as a co-factor in predisposing or perpetuating the different forms of TMD. As such, it should not be considered a major factor.

AIM: To verify the prevalence of malocclusions and social-economic conditions of children aged 5 and 12 years old in the Familiar Health Unit of Castelo Branco III, Joao Pessoa/PB. METHODS: 49 children aged 5 and 12 years old were examined. The exams followed the methodology of the WHO (1997) and SB Brazil (2001), and was used the criterion of the WHO (1997) and the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). RESULTS: It was found that most of the children had already gone to the dental office (mainly of the ones of the public network). The presence of malocclusions was observed in 33.3% of the 5 years old children and 40.7% of the 12 years old, there was no association with the gender in both ages (p > 0.05). Most of the mothers presented education above 8 years (80.8% for the 5 years old children and 92.5% for the 12 years old), related income below two minimum salaries in both ages studied. It was observed the access to mouth health products (97.9% had toothbrush) and a good frequency of brushing was related (64.6% brushed 3 or more times a day). CONCLUSION: There was no agreement between the criterion adopted for definition of malocclusion and self perception towards the appearance, treatment and mastication. Facing this, it was necessary the implementation of public politics for prevention and orthodontic treatment in these children.
