New Genera, Species, Synonymies, and Combinations in the “Lygus Complex” from Japan, with Discussion on Peltidolygus Poppius and Warrisia Carvalho (Heteroptera: Miridae: Mirinae)

Tomohide Yasunaga; Michael D. Schwartz; Frédéric Chérot

Abstract Three new genera, Pinalitopsis, Nepiolygus, and Apolygopsis, are proposed to accommodate the following new species of Japanese mirine plant bugs: P. rhodopotnia from the Kii Peninsula and Shikoku, and N. arare and A. furvocarinatus from the Ryukyu Islands. A new species of the genus Pachylygus Yasunaga, 1994, P. anthrax, is also described from Shikoku. Several new synonymies are proposed: Peltidolygus Poppius, 1915 = Zhengiella Yasunaga and Lu, 1994; Warrisia Carvalho, 1986 = Gotocapsus Yasunaga and Nakatani, 1998; and Warrisia huonensis (Poppius, 1914) = Lygus tonkinensis Poppius, 1914. The following new combinations are established: Peltidolygus scutellatus (Yasunaga and Lu, 1994), Warrisia deraeocoroides (Yasunaga and Nakatani, 1998), Apolygopsis elegans (Zheng and Wang, 1983), A. emeia (Zheng and Wang, 1983), A. mosaicus (Zheng and Wang, 1983), A. nigritulus (Linnavuori, 1961), A. picturatus (Zheng and Wang, 1983), and A. yunnananus (Zheng and Wang, 1983). Two subgenera of Lygocoris Reuter, 1875, Lygocorias Yasunaga, 1992 new status and Neolygus Knight, 1917 new status, are raised to genera. The relationships between Peltidolygus and Henrylygus Schwartz, 1998, and among Gianellia Poppius, 1914, Krausmiris Carvalho, 1986, Liistonotus Reuter, 1906, and Warrisia, are discussed. Keys are provided to distinguish Japanese genera of the ”Lygus complex” and species of Peltidolygus and Warrisia.

A preliminary phylogenetic analysis of the genus Fulvius Stål (Hemiptera:Miridae: Cylapinae) based on molecular data

Izabela Sadowska-Woda; Frédéric Chérot; Tobias Malm

The systematics and phylogeny of the genus Fulvius Stal remains unclear. We present herein the first analysis of the phylogenetic relationships within the genus Fulvius based on DNA sequences. The phylogenetic interrelationships in the genus Fulvius are investigated using partial DNA sequence data from two mitochondrial genes, the 16S ribosomal large subunit and the cytochrome oxidase I (COI). DNA sequences for Fulvius species representing three different subgroups distinguished previously on the base of morphological characters alone are compared to sequences from the closely related genera Rhinocylapidius and Cylapus . The data are analyzed using parsimony and Bayesian inference. The results confirm that on the basis of molecular data we can distinguish the same congruent groups of Fulvius species as using morphological characters, however with inclusion of the specimens of the genus Rhinocylapidius in the bifenestratus -group. Additional studies are needed to clarify the phylogenetic relationships within the tribe Fulviini, as well as within the genus Fulvius and its relation to Rhinocylapidius . However, the results of this study suggest that 16S and COI sequences will be very useful as molecular markers for such studies among these species-groups.

First record of the Cylapine genus Hemiophthalmocoris (Heteroptera: Miridae) from Indonesia, with description of a new species

Jacek Gorczyca; Frédéric Chérot

described on the basis of a single female collected in Kenya (Poppius 1912) and has for a long time been represented only by the type species, H. lugubris Poppius. Two new species, H. longirostris and H. caligans, were subsequently described by Schmitz (1970) on the basis of specimens collected in Central Africa. More recently, eight new species have been described from various parts of Africa by Gorczyca (2000). The genus belongs to the mirid subfamily Cylapinae Kirkaldy, 1903, tribe Fulviini Uhler, 1886, but has a set of unusual characters. Its claws are not toothed subapically but possess long, sharp spines at their base (fig. 2). The eyes are covered with setae and the cuneus is very long and thin (fig. 1). The majority of above mentioned species of the genus were represented only by female specimens. Males have been described for the first time in two species from Tanzania: Hemiophthalmocoris micropterus Gorczyca, 2000 and H. abbreviatus Gorczyca, 2000. Unfortunately, since the male specimens were dissected and damaged before their description, no information is currently available on their genitalia. All species of Hemiophthalmocoris were described from Africa and no record of this genus was previously known from other parts of the world. Among the material deposited in the collection of the Natural History Museum in London, the senior author found four representatives of this genus collected in Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park (formerly Dumoga Bone National Park) in Sulawesi, Indonesia. They are known only from female specimens and belong to a new species, which is described below. The female genitalia of the new species are compared with the previously unstudied female genitalia of closely related African representatives.

Review of the mirine plant bug genus Eurystylus Stål from Japan and Taiwan (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae: Mirinae), with descriptions of two new species, a new synonymy and a new combination

Tomohide Yasunaga; Yukinobu Nakatani; Frédéric Chérot

Species of the Old World mirine plant bug genus Eurystylus Stål (the Head Bugs) in Japan and Taiwan are reviewed. Four species are currently recognized. Two new species are diagnosed and described: E. ryukyus n. sp. (from SW Japan and Taiwan) and E. jingfui n. sp. (Taiwan). Two known species, E. coelestialium (Kirkaldy) and E. sauteri Poppius, are diagnosed; new distributional records are added for the latter. Two keys are provided to aid the identifications of (1) Eurystylus and four related genera and (2) the species of Eurystylus known from Japan and Taiwan. The phylogenetic relationships of Eurystylus with the assumed related genera are discussed. Eurystylomorpha Poppius is synonymized with Eurystylopsis Poppius, and a new combination, Eurystylopsis crassicornis (Poppius), is accordingly proposed.

A Remarkable new Mirine Plant Bug genus (Heteroptera, Miridae: Mirini) from Australia and New Guinea, with description of two new species

Frédéric Chérot; M. B. Malipatil; Michael D. Schwartz

Abstract The new genus, Neopeplus, is proposed to accommodate two remarkable new mirine plant bug species, N. trianai, from Australia and N. dogoni, from New Guinea. External anatomy and genital structures of both sexes of N. trianai and of N. dogoni male are described. The possible phyletic relationships of the new genus are briefly analysed.
