Abstract The involvement construct has been extensively studied in the consumer behavior literature. Recent conceptual and measurement breakthroughs have made examination of the construct appealing in the contexts of recreational and tourist behavior. This article suggests 15 propositions that evolve from a review of involvement‐related literature. The propositions are grouped under the following headings: measurement issues; the relationship between involvement and time; the relationship of involvement with search and purchase behavior; the relationship between involvement and promotional stimuli; and accessing the involvement variable. The propositions are intended to stimulate and guide empirical research related to involvement in recreation and tourism contexts.

Abstract From the discussions of Veblen (1899) to the writings of contemporary researchers, there has been a compelling argument that consumption in leisure has a strong symbolic character. By focusing on the nature of that symbolism, unequivocal parallels are apparent in leisure consumption and leisure theory. This article reviews the literature in leisure and consumer behavior to identify these parallel issues from conceptualizations of sign value and self‐expression. Directions for future research investigating the roles of sign value and self‐expression in leisure, and a theoretical model of the relationship between leisure choice, personal identity, and social identity are provided.

There are four areas of concern in the ethical pursuit of tourism. Too often, tourism development is planned without consideration of the local environments or communitys needs and characteristics. An ethical treatment of the environment and community should involve consideration and participation in the planning and decision-making process, as well as implementing effective guidelines to assure fairness in employing both traditional and non-traditional employees. Finally, the industry must pay special attention to the target market: tourists.

Abstract This study examined the magnitude and direction of travel spending recall accuracy over a three month period using a panel survey design. Results confirmed expectations that substantial recall error occurs in the estimation of trip expenditures over an extended period of time. However, the direction of error (overestimation) differed dramatically from previous findings in the travel literature. Several plausible (methodological and theoretical) explanations are provided to explain the apparent contradiction. Implications for subsequent travel spending research are discussed.
