Remarks on the brightness paradox described by Metzger

Summary1.The Metzger effect, i. e. the brightening of a Hering spot shadow after the introduction of a larger shadow, cannot be explained as a case of transformation. Theoretical considerations as well as experimental evidence speak against this explanation.2.Experiments with changing fixation point show that a retinal explanation is equally impossible.3.The after effect in time is essential for the Metzger phenomenon. The place of the after effect is determined by the structure of the field and not by retinal localisation as is the case with the ordinary after image.Zusammenfassung1.Es ist nicht möglich den Metzger-Effekt, d. h. das Aufleuchten eines Heringschen Fleckschattens nach Einführung eines größeren Schattens, durch Transformation zu erklären. Sowohl theoretische Erwägungen als auch Experimente sprechen dagegen.2.Experimente mit wechselndem Fixationspunkt zeigen, daß auch eine retinale Erklärung unmöglich ist.3.Wesentlich am Metzger-Effekt ist die Nachwirkung in der Zeit. Der Ort der Nachwirkung ist durch die Struktur des Feldes und nicht, wie beim gewöhnlichen Nachbild, durch retinale Lokalisation bestimmt.
