This study was performed in order to compare the effectiveness of two different manual treatment methods in patients withchronic tension type headache (TTH).A totalof 35 patients were randomly assigned into two groups; 30 of them completed the treatment programs. Supere cial heat and classical massage were applied to both groups. In addition to these methods, connective tissue manipulation (CTM) was performed to Group I ( n D 15) and Dr. James Cyriax’ s vertebral mobilisation to Group II ( n D 15). Treatment consisted of 20 sessions during four weeks. The following parameters were evaluated before treatment, immediately after treatment, and one month after the treatment in order to compare the effectiveness of the methods: headache index values, active cervical range of motion, and pressure pain threshold values. Results of the study indicated thatall of the parameters showed signie cant improvements in both groups: there were no differences between the groups as regards the headache index, the pressure pain threshold values and the active range of motion (p > 0:05). In conclusion, both treatments can be used in patients with chronic tension-type headache. summary

AbstractConnective tissue manipulation (CTM) is a manual therapy which stimulates responses of the autonomic nervous system and corrects the changes in skin, underlying connective tissue and muscle. The purpose of this study was to determine the results of CTM in the treatment of tension type headache (TTH). CTM was applied to 20 TTH patients for a total of 20 treatments in four weeks. Before the treatment, all subjects were evaluated retrospectively for pain intensity (using visual analogue scale), duration and frequency, analgesic usage and accompanying symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sleep disorders, muscle tenderness and the presence of connective tissue tension. It was observed that there was a significant decrease in pain intensity, duration and frequency (p < 0.05) at the end of 6 months followup period. In addition, we observed an improvement in the accompanying symptoms. It can be concluded that, because CTM reduces the drug overuse in TTH patients, it can be used as a non-pharmacological appr...

The study was planned to evaluate the effect of loss of hearing and vision on balance and gait in 60 children, 20 of whom had hearing loss (M age = 9.3 yr., SD = 0.9), 20 who were visually impaired (M age = 12.2 yr., SD = 2.5), and 20 controls with no disability (M age = 9.4 yr., SD = 0.6). Standing Balance subtests of the Southern California Sensory Integration Tests were used. Gait analysis was conducted on a powdered surface. When the gait analysis results of the three groups of children were compared, statistically significant differences were noted. Scores for the hearing impaired group were more like those of the control group than those of the visually impaired group. Results show that children with visual impairment had more problems with balance and gait than controls.

Background This study investigated participation in physical education and sports lessons of visually impaired adolescents and their sighted peers and compared their physical activity levels. Material/Methods A total of 22 visually impaired children of mean age 13.59±1.14 years and 31 sighted children aged 13.61±0.50 years participated in the study. A questionnaire prepared for this study was used to investigate participation of visually impaired adolescents and their sighted peers in physical education and sports lessons at school and the problems they encounter while doing sports. The Turkish version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire – short-form (IPAQ-SF) was used to evaluate the physical activity level of the subjects. Results The results of our study suggest that physical activity levels of visually impaired children and their sighted children were similar (p>0.05). Totally blind children had lower IPAQ scores than those with low vision (p<0.05), and girls were less active physically than boys (p<0.05). There were few differences in physical education lessons of the groups, in taking part in sports-related organizations, and future plans. Conclusions Children in secondary school, especially visually impaired children, need to be more motivated and more encouraged to take part in various sports or physical activities.

AbstractDysmenorrhea is the leading cause of recurrent short-term school absenteeism among female adolescents. Primary dysmenorrhea is believed to be prostaglandin mediated. It is currently treated by hormonal and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents. Because of the side effects and compliance problems of the drugs, alternative methods like TENS and acupuncture have become popular in recent years. Fish oil (omega-3) is not accepted as a drug, but there are reports in literature about the improvement of dysmenorrhea symptoms by fish oil usage. In our study, we evaluated 44 young girls aged 15–19 who suffered from dysmenorrhea symptoms. For two months they used only oral analgesics and during the following two months we gave them fish oil (omega-3) and allowed them to use oral analgesics if they needed. When we compared the results, days with school absenteeism, amount of oral analgesics used and VAS scores of the patients were significantly lower in the two months during which fish oil (omega-3) was used.

The primary aim of this study was to investigate the pain characteristics, academic performance and participation in sports and social activities among students with primary dysmenorrhea (PD) who have different pain intensities and to compare dysmenorrhea‐related life impact with pain‐free students.

Amac: Bu arastirma, duzenli sigara icen sedanterler ile duzenli sigara icen ancak ayni zamanda duzenli egzersiz aliskanligi olan kisilerin yasam kalitelerini karsilastirmak amaciyla planlanmistir. Gerec-Yontem: Arastirmaya duzenli sigara icen ve duzenli egzersiz aliskanligi olan 30 erkek ( Grup I ) (yas ort: 23.70±2.41 yil) ile 30 sedanter erkek ( Grup II ) (yas ort: 22.87±2.10 yil) dahil edilmistir. Olgularin yasam kalitelerini degerlendirmek amaciyla Short Form-36 anketi (SF-36) uygulanmistir. Bulgular: Gruplar demografik yonden ve sigaraya baslama yasi, sigara icilen toplam sure ve sigara tuketimi acisindan benzer bulunmustur (p>0.05). Bununla birlikte SF-36’nin parametrelerinin hicbirinde gruplar arasinda fark bulunmamistir (p>0.05). Tartisma: Uzun sure sigara tuketimine bagli olarak gorulen hastaliklara ait belirtilerin genellikle 40 yas civarinda fark edilmeye baslandigi belirtilmektedir. Yasam kalite algilarinin gruplar arasinda benzer bulunmasi, olgularin yas ortalamalari, sigara ictikleri toplam sure (yil) ve sigara tuketimleri (paket/yil) goz onunde bulunduruldugunda, sigaranin yasam kalitelerini bozabilecek kumulatif etkiyi henuz olusturmadigi dusundurmektedir.

AbstractThis study was performed in order to investigate the relation between chronic tension type headache and general health status of 90 subjects. Duration of headache since onset (year), pain intensity (VAS: visual analogue scale), frequency, headache index values (severity of headache × frequency) and general health questionnaire results were recorded. When data were analysed, positive correlations were found among pain intensity, frequency, headache index value and general health questionnaire results (p < 0.01). We consider that as the intensity and frequency of headache increase, general health worsens.
