Elemental analysis of Akçaabat tobacco and its ash by EDXRF spectrometry

Abstract The concentration of eight different elements in tobacco of different region in Akcaabat (Trabzon/Turkey) was determined using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence method. A radioisotope excited X-ray fluorescence analysis using the method of multiple standard addition is applied for the elemental analysis of tobacco and its ash. An annular 50 mCi 241 Am radioactive source and an annular 50 mCi 55 Fe radioactive source were used for excitation of characteristic K X-rays. An Si(Li) detector which has a 147 eV full width at half maximum for 5.9 keV photons was used for intensity measurements. A qualitative analysis of spectral peaks showed that the samples contained potassium, calcium, titanium, iron, copper, bromine, strontium and barium. Evaluation of these elements with their potential hazards for smokers is briefly discussed.

Investigation of neutron shielding properties depending on number of boron atoms for colemanite, ulexite and tincal ores by experiments and FLUKA Monte Carlo simulations

(241)Am-Be source and three samples including different amounts of boron atoms per unit volume called colemanite, ulexite and tincal were used in total macroscopic cross section experiments. Also FLUKA Monte Carlo code was used to simulate total macroscopic cross sections, absorbed doses and deposited energies by low energy neutron interactions. Besides half value layers of samples were calculated and compared to paraffin. As a result, ascending concentration of boron atoms can enhance neutron shielding property of samples.

Determination of K-shell absorption jump factor for some elements using EDXRF Technique

Abstract The K-shell absorption jump factor is measured using an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer for several elements including Nb, Tc, Ru, Rh, Cd, In, Sn, Te, Pr, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er. The experimental absorption jump factors are compared with the theoretical estimates of Broll (X-Ray Spectrom. 15 (1986) 271) based on the fundamental parameter method. Good agreement is observed between experimental results and theoretical estimates in the 41⩽Z⩽68 atomic region. Experimental absorption jump factors have been evaluated using the experimental fluorescence cross-sections measured by Budak et al. (Nucl. Instrum. Methods 149 (1999a) 379) and Karabulut et al. (Nucl. Instrum. Methods 152 (1999) 202). The K-shell absorption jump factors are fitted to simple linear and compared with theoretical, fitted and XCOM values.

Measurement of the K shell absorption jump factor of some elements

Abstract K shell absorption jump factors for the elements 40⩽ Z ⩽60 have been derived from previously measured total atomic cross sections and from measured K α production cross sections. The results are in reasonable agreement with literature data.

EDXRF analysis of murgul pyrite ore concentrates

Abstract Murgul pyrite ore from the city of Artvin, Turkey was analysed by means of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) by using the standard addition method. The XRF method with an 241 Am annular source of excitation and a Si(Li) detector is employed The results give useful knowledge about the concentration levels of Fe, Cu, As, Sn, Sb, In and I in Murgul pyrite ore.

Abstract The photopeak, intrinsic, and radial efficiency of a Si(Li) detector has been determined as a function of energy over the range 5.5 to 60 keV energy region using four standard sources. Furthermore, emission probabilities for the standard sources have been determined and compared with literature values.

Fast measurement of total atomic attenuation, total atomic photoelectric and total atomic scattering cross sections in the range 58⩽Z⩽68 using radioisotope X-ray fluorescence

Abstract Cross sections for total atomic attenuation, total atomic photoelectric and total atomic scattering in nine elements (58⩽Z⩽68) at 59.537 keV are reported. The experimental values of the cross sections were determined by measuring the transmission factor. Measurements have been performed using an Am-241 point source and an Si(Li) solid state detector. Experimental results have been compared with theoretically calculated values and other available experimental results. Good agreement was observed among the experimental, theoretical and other experimental values.

Estimation of concentration and temperature profiles for methane-steam reforming reaction in a porous catalyst

Abstract This work represents the results of the theoretical study of the distribution of concentration and temperature in porous catalyst, carried out over spherical catalyst pellets for the methane-steam reforming reaction over Ni/MgAl 2 O 4 catalyst. Kinetic information has been taken from a recent study [J. Xu, F.G. Froment, AIChE J. (35) (1989) 88–96] for the above reaction. The mass and heat transfer distribution coupled with chemical reaction, outside and within the catalyst particles for methane-steam reforming reaction was estimated in this present study. A computer program was written to calculate both concentration profile and temperature profile for the methane-steam reforming reaction.

Analysis of trace elements in different three region coals in Erzurum (Turkey): a study using EDXRF

Abstract Analysis by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectroscopy of Askale, Balkaya and Sutkans coal in Erzurum (Turkey) has been carried out for the determination of their elemental composition, using an annular 241 Am and 55 Fe radioisotope source. The characteristic K X-rays of the different elements were detected with Si(Li) and Ge(Li) detectors. The analysis were performed on coal samples and the results were compared.
