Self-regulating WDM amplifier module for scalable lightwave networks

L. Eskildsen; E.L. Goldstein; G.K. Chang; M.Z. Iqbal; C. Lin

By placing a set of pump-shared, gain-compressed, amplifying fibers in parallel between a multiplexer pair, one obtains a simple WDM gain module suitable for large transparent multiwavelength networks. Systems employing such modules self-adjust for transparency on a channel-by-channel basis without servo-loops. >

Multichannel operation of AOTF switches: reducing channel-to-channel interaction

Janet Jackel; J.E. Baran; G.K. Chang; M.Z. Iqbal; G.H. Song; W.J. Tomlinson; Daniel J. Fritz; Robert W. Ade

An acoustooptic tunable filter (AOTF) can be used as a multichannel wavelength-routing switch; however, switching efficiency decreases and the switched wavelength channels shift toward each other when neighboring channels are selected simultaneously. We explain the cause of this behavior and show how to reduce the degradation in switch characteristics using a combination of passband flattening and counterpropagating acoustic waves.<<ETX>>

Chaotic lasing effect in a closed cycle in transparent wavelength division multiplexed networks

W. Xin; G.K. Chang; B. Meagher; S. J. B. Yoo; Janet Jackel; J. Young; Georgios Ellinas

Chaotic lasing effect in a closed cycle of wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) networks with channel power equalizers and gain-damped erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) is observed. It causes degradation in other wavelength channels, but does not saturate the EDFAs.

Clear channel transmission of ATM/SONET and subcarrier multiplexed signals in a reconfigurable multiwavelength all-optical network testbed

G.K. Chang; J.H. Schaffner; M.Z. Iqbal; Georgios Ellinas; G.L. Tangonan; J.K. Gamelin; J.L. Pikulski

Simultaneous transmission of subcarrier multiplexed multichannel FM-video and 3-GHz binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) digital signals, co-propagated with ATM/SONET multimedia services has been demonstrated for the first time in a reconfigurable multiwavelength all-optical network testbed. The experiment was performed over 160 km of single-mode fiber and a cascade of six erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) and five wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) cross-connects.

Time-Dependent Model of an Acousto-Optic Tunable Filter for Multiple-Channel Operations

G. Hugh Song; G.K. Chang; M.Z. Iqbal; Janet Jackel; J. E. Baran; W. J. Tomlinson

With its wide tunability and multiple-channel switching capability, the integrated version of acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTF’s) has shown healthy development in recent years for wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) optical-communication network applications as 2 × 2 and 4×4 frequency-selective optical switches.

Field deployment and evaluation of 1510 nm data communication network for MONET Washington DC network trial

H. Dai; G.K. Chang; B. Meagher; J. Young; W. Xin; S. J. B. Yoo; Georgios Ellinas; W.T. Andersen; R. McFarland; P. Gary; H. Dardy

We report on the design and field performance evaluation of an embedded, out-of-band, 1510-nm data communication network (DCN) at OC-3c data rate for the eight-wavelength, reconfigurable MONET washington D.C. testbed. The results of this field trial demonstrate that a multinode control and management system can depend on such a highly reliable DCN.
