Acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTF) have been investigated as a potential basis for multiwavelength cross-connects in optical networks. In this paper, we discuss crosstalk issues, some of which are common to other cross-connect technologies, and some of which are unique to the AOTF, which will determine the suitability of the AOTF technology for this application. In particular we show how the interactions between wavelength channels make the AOTF sensitive to switch architectures, we conclude that significant performance improvements will be required to diminish crosstalk if the AOTF is to be useful in any but small-size cross-connects, even when spare and wavelength dilation are used.

Self-regulating WDM amplifier module for scalable lightwave networks

L. Eskildsen; E.L. Goldstein; G.K. Chang; M.Z. Iqbal; C. Lin

By placing a set of pump-shared, gain-compressed, amplifying fibers in parallel between a multiplexer pair, one obtains a simple WDM gain module suitable for large transparent multiwavelength networks. Systems employing such modules self-adjust for transparency on a channel-by-channel basis without servo-loops. >

Optical label switching testbed has been demonstrated to realize an NGI network with ultra-low latency, simplified protocol stacks, and data transparency. Packet applications have been successfully sent, with less than 1 msec switching node delay, over a label-switched network.

We summarise the design and implementation of an ultra-low latency, high throughput Internet protocol (IP) over wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) packet-switched data network for NGI applications, utilizing innovative hardware and software solutions. Optical-label switching (OLS) is the novel method that is used to realize flexible bandwidth-on-demand IP packet transports on a reconfigurable WDM network.

Clear channel transmission of ATM/SONET and subcarrier multiplexed signals in a reconfigurable multiwavelength all-optical network testbed

G.K. Chang; J.H. Schaffner; M.Z. Iqbal; Georgios Ellinas; G.L. Tangonan; J.K. Gamelin; J.L. Pikulski

Simultaneous transmission of subcarrier multiplexed multichannel FM-video and 3-GHz binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) digital signals, co-propagated with ATM/SONET multimedia services has been demonstrated for the first time in a reconfigurable multiwavelength all-optical network testbed. The experiment was performed over 160 km of single-mode fiber and a cascade of six erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) and five wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) cross-connects.

Time-Dependent Model of an Acousto-Optic Tunable Filter for Multiple-Channel Operations

G. Hugh Song; G.K. Chang; M.Z. Iqbal; Janet Jackel; J. E. Baran; W. J. Tomlinson

With its wide tunability and multiple-channel switching capability, the integrated version of acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTF’s) has shown healthy development in recent years for wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) optical-communication network applications as 2 × 2 and 4×4 frequency-selective optical switches.
