Silicone elastomers are well known for their excellent long term weatherability. This property makes them potentially ideal materials for coating high voltage power transmission insulators exposed to the environment. The concept of coating high voltage insulators with silicones was demonstrated by Niemi at Dow Corning Corporation a few years ago(1). His evaluation utilized various silicone polymer compositions containing different organic substituents on silicon; such as hydrogen, methyl and phenyl. The best silicone composition was found to be an elastomer based on hydrogen and methyl substituted silicone polymers.
