Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of halo nucleus 6He on proton target were measured at 82.3 MeV/u. The experimental results are well reproduced by optical model calculations using global potential KD02 with a reduction of the depth of real volume part by a factor of 0.7. A systematic analysis shows that this behavior might be related to the weakly bound property of unstable nuclei.

The cross sections of one- and two-neutron transfers induced by 6He at 25 MeV/u on a 9Be target were measured in RIKEN. Clear identification of the recoiled Be isotopes was achieved. In total five 11Be and 371 10Be events, the corresponding two- and one-neutron transfers were obtained and analysed for transfer reaction cross sections. The results are useful to determine the spectroscopic factors of the internal halo structure of the 6He nucleus.

Three large sized glass resistive plate chambers (RPCs) are built and applied to measure the spatial resolution of the detector. The readout strips are collected to a LC delay-line and the time difference is used to determine the position. Cosmic rays are triggered by a set of two scintillation counters and the coincidently measured positions from the three RPCs are used to deduce the position uncertainty. In average a spatial resolution of 0.90 mm (FWHM) is obtained for a single RPC, with a good uniformity across the detection area. This result suggests that large sized glass RPC operating in the avalanche mode is a promising candidate for the muon tomography detection system.

The design principle for a multi-wire proportional chamber with a cathode strip and delay-line readout is described. A prototype chamber of a size of 10 cm ×10 cm was made together with the readout electronics circuit. A very clean signal with very low background noise was obtained by applying a transformer between the delay-line and the pre-amplifier in order to match the resistance. Along the anode wire direction a position resolution of less than 0.5 mm was achieved with a 55Fe-5.9 keV X ray source. The simple structure, large effective area and high position resolution allow the application of a gas chamber of this kind to many purposes.

A laser phase determination method and a transfer function that includes a proportional term of a measured photoelectron energy spectrum are presented to directly measure the detailed temporal structure of a narrow bandwidth attosecond extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) pulse. The method is based on the spectrum measurement of an electron generated by EUV photo-ionization interacting with a femtosecond laser field. The results of the study suggest that measurements should be taken at 0° or 180° with respect to the linear laser polarization. The method has a temporal measurement range of about half a laser oscillation period. The temporal resolution also depends on the jitter and control precision of the laser and EUV pulses.

A new method of phase determination is presented to directly measure the intensity and frequency temporal profiles of attosecond EUV pulses. The profiles can be reconstructed from the photoelectron energy spectra measured with two different laser intensities at 0 degrees and 180 degrees with respect to the linear laser polarization using a cross correlation between the femtosecond laser and the attosecond EUV. The method has a temporal measurement range from a quarter to about half of a laser oscillation period. The time resolution depends on the jitter and control precision of laser and EUV pulses. This method improves the time resolution in measuring attosecond EUV pulses.

An experiment for knockout reaction induced by 8He beam at 82.5 MeV/nucleon on CH2 and C targets was carried out. The 6He and 4He core fragments at forward angles and the recoiled protons at large angles were detected coincidently. From this exclusive measurement the valence nucleon knockout mechanism and the core knockout mechanism are separated, which can be applied to the exclusive spectroscopic study on the structure of exotic nuclei.

Breakup reactions of the double borromean nucleus 8He were measured at 82.3 MeV/u on CH2 and C targets. The coincident detection of two decaying neutrons and the high performance for neutron cross talk rejection are realized in this experiment. The relative energy spectrum for 8He was reconstructed with good statistics. The spectrum exhibits a structure of two resonant peaks, one at an excitation energy of about 3.0 and the other at about 4.14 MeV, respectively. Substantially larger cross section for the first resonance is observed in comparison to the results reported previously.

A knockout reaction induced by 6He at 61.2 MeV/u was carried out at the HIRFL-RIBLL radioactive beam line. The α core fragments at forward angles were detected in coincidence with the recoiled protons at large angles. From this coincident measurement the valence nucleon knockout mechanism and the core knockout mechanism can be separated according to the polar angle correlation between the core fragments and the recoiled protons. It is demonstrated that, when reconstructing the resonant state of a weakly bound nucleus, the contamination resulting from the core knockout mechanism should be eliminated in order to obtain the correct structure information.

Differential cross sections for the quasi-elastic scattering of C-16 at 47.5 MeV/nucleon from C-12 target are measured. Coupled-channels calculations are carried out and the optical potential parameters are obtained by fitting the experimental angular distribution.
