The consequences of the infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii in myenteric neurons of the jejunum of swines reactive to NADH-diaphorase and NADPH-diaphorase were evaluated in this study. Ten 88-day-old mixed-breed swines (Pietrain and Wessex) were assigned into two groups: Control (n=5) and Experimental (n=5), which orally received 5000 sporulated oocysts from a genotype III T. gondii strain. After 30days, the animals were anesthetized, having part of their jejunum removed and stained with NADPH-diaphorase and NADH-diaphorase. NADPHd-p neurons (nitrergic) presented increase of the number of cells per ganglion and hypertrophy. The number of NADHd-p neurons (metabolic more active) and their nuclear area decreased.

The aim of this study was to perform a morphometric analysis of the different layers of the jejunal wall and epithelial cells of pigs with toxoplasmosis. Experiments were conducted using 10, 88-day-old crossbred (Pietran x Wessex) pigs divided into two groups: control (n=5) and experimental (n=5). The experimental group consisted of animals inoculated orally with 5000 sporulated oocysts of a genotype III strain of Toxoplasma gondii. At 30 and 60 days following inoculation, the animals were anaesthetised for jejunal biopsy. The intestinal segments were processed routinely for histology. Transverse cuts (4 microm thick) were stained with haematoxylin and eosin (HE), Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS), Alcian Blue (AB), pH 2.5, and Alcian Blue (AB), pH 1.0. We observed hypertrophy of the jejunal wall, increased enterocyte height, and a decreased number of intraepithelial lymphocytes in the infected animals. There were no changes in the number of goblet cells.

The repair induced by an homologous muscular segment conserved in 300% supersaturated sugar solution on the diaphragmatic muscle of dogs was investigated. Nine adults mongrel dogs, three males, weights varying from 10.4 to 21.0kg, were used separated in three equally numbered denominated groups I, II and III. A defect was created, on the muscular portion of the right hemidiaphragm, with dimensions of 9.0 x 6.0cm, through thoracotomy in the 10th right intercostal space. The graft was sutured with thread poligalactin 910 3-0, by means of horizontal mattress suture, in an isolated pattern. The dogs were observed for a period of 30 days (subgroups I), 75 days (groups II) and 120 days (groups III) postoperatively. After this period, macroscopic observation and collection of samples for histologic evaluation were performed. It was verified in the animals of the subgroup I, partial substitution and in the subgroups II and III, total substitution of the muscular portion of the diaphragm. A fibrovascular tissue occluding the diaphragmatic defect was observed. With the postoperative evolution, a thin tissue, almost transparent, was identified. The segment of diaphragmatic muscle conserved in 300% supersaturated sugar solution, at room temperature, for repair of great defects in the diaphragmatic muscle of dogs was substituted by a fine layer of fibrous connective tissue.

Eighteen 18 to 24-month-old mixed breed bullocks were submitted to removal of the apical ligament of the penis to induce penile deviation. After 60 days from the surgery the steers were put together with cows in heat. A ventral and right lateral penis deviation leading to incapacity to copulate was observed. The bullocks were then submitted to an autolgous transplant of a cartilage segment from the ear pinna placed on top of the tunica albuginea, replacing the penile ligament apical tha had been removed. The implanted material was well tolerated; histologically with only infiltration few mononuclear cells, polymorpho nucleated cells and giant cells, and fibrosis, which caused strong adherence and provided ability to sustain the free penile extremity. The bullocks that were cows in heat did not show any degree of penile deviation nor any change in sexual behavior. The surgical method described here was shown to be satisfactory as to be indicated for correction of ventral and right lateral penile deviation in bullocks.

The arterial vascularization of the uterine horns in 24 pregnant cross breed cats were studied. In 20 animals, with gestation between 7 and 9 weeks, the abdominal aorta was injected with Neoprene latex 650 solution associated with bario sulphate 1004. The X-ray were taked and the animals were fixed in formaldehyde 10% aqueous solution and dissected to study the arterial distribution to paraplacentary and placentary zone. The Power Doppler Ecocardiografh was realized in 4 animals, in paraplacentary zones the vessels resistence rate is smaller than trought uterine artery. In all observations, the uterine artery is the principal vessel to vascularize the uterine horns, emitting 2 to 17 branches, with hight frequence 5 to 12 branches, that wich running to paraplacentary zone and/or placentary zone, forming the anastomotic arcade. There is not estatistical significative difference between branches number from each region individually, however the X-ray analyses showed a hight constrast concentration in regions of the placentary zone. The ovaric artery has participation in arterial vascularization to cranial extremity of the uterine horns, where it makes anastomosis with branches from uterine artery.

The neutrophils play an essential role in host defenses against infection. When stimulated it responds with an increase of consumption of oxygen known as respiratory burst, so generating a great quantity of superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide, which play an important function antimicrobial, and subsequent degranulation of neutrophils. Polymers are materials largely used in veterinary medicine. Several studies have been carried out to find new polymers and their biocompatibility to medical use. One polymer of cassavas starch (Manihot esculenta crantz) was developed at the Paranaense Universitys Laboratory of Chemistry - Campus Umuarama City, aiming to analyze the neutrophils degranulation after exposition to this starch. The early results showed a bioinert action of the polymer of cassavas starch on different concentrations when it was in contact with neutrophils. Thus, this material is potentially indicated as biomaterial.
