The present study evaluated twenty-five sarnples of the muscular layer of the small gut in dogs, which were preserved in a 300% sugar supersaturated. solution, 98% glycerin, 5% polyvinil-pirrolidona and tiomersal tincture at 1: 1000. The samples were maintained under conservation for 45 days and further submitted to ultrastructural assay by transmission electron microscopy. The cellular integrity was not entirely preserved when using the media, while the 300% sugar solution and 98% glycerin were the preservation conditions that better maintained the cellular ultrastructure.

Twelve steers of mixed breeds, between sixteen and twenty months olds, have been submitted a excising of the apical ligament of the penis. All animals were observed twenty days after surgery in natural copulation to evaluate the results and the sexual behavior. The teaser showed ventral and lateral right side desviation of the penis with complete inability of copulation. It was concluded that the described surgical technique is efficient easy and fastly executed. It can be done for preparation teaser bulls which would be used in dairy and beef cattle programs to detect heat cows to be artificially inseminated.

With the objective to investigate a possible association between foot diseases, clinical mastitis and/or metritis and predisposing factors for foot diseases, 5300 dairy cows from 80 intensive and semi-intensive farms were used. In 325 (6.13%) cows only foot disease was diagnosed, in 35 (0.66%) foot disease and clinical mastitis, in 52 (0.98%) foot disease and metritis, in 28 (0.53%) foot disease, clinical mastitis and metritis, in 128 (2.42%) only metritis, in 165 (3.11%) only clinical mastitis, and in 89 (1.68%) cows metritis and clinical mastitis. Rapid changes in the diet, high exposure time of hoof horn to slurry and wet conditions, concrete floors, use of footbaths, low frequency of claw trimming, irregular quarantine, and no attention to health aspects during acquisition of the animals were considered as major risk factors for the occurrence of those diseases. The McNemar test for dependent samples showed significant statistical differences between the occurrence of foot disease, clinical mastitis and metritis, in spite of the poor association between those diseases. It was concluded that there was no expressive relationship between foot diseases, clinical mastitis and metritis in lactent cows.

The dental plaque is the primary factor for gingivitis formation, dental calculus, oral malodor and periodontal disease. To evaluate the amount of dental plaque removed by the dental brush and thumb-stall, 60 male and female dogs of different races, age and weight were divided in two groups and studies. The index of Logan & Boyce was used to quantify the dental plaque before and after the toothbrush. Statistical difference was observed (p 0.05) between the use of the dental brush and the thumb-stall.

Metal clamps were used in dermal suture of fifty crossbred cattle, of various weight, ranging from 1.5 to 5 years of age; after esthetic dehorning. The animals were operated on differents farms from Goias State, Brazil, during 1995 and 1996 and evaluated after surgery. Four animals showed serous exudation two days after surgery. One animal had unilateral sinusitis and in other three there were wound dehiscence. The technique proposed was fast; skin divulsion was easier, there was a good hemostasy and cicatrization was esthetic. Metal suture is fast and easily applied.

To avaliate the incidence of bacterial plaque 30 mogreal dogs were utilizated, distributed among three equal groups. According to age, group I was composed of 0 to 2 years-old dogs, group II was 3 to 5 years-old, and group III over 6 years-old. The animals underwent a general anesthesia and metilrosanilin cloret was applied over the tooth, to evidence the bacterial mass. The plaques were distributed to 80.99% in group I, 71.42% in group II and 83.96% in group III. The dental groups were considerated apart, showing index of 64.84% on the incisar tooth, 84.80% on the canine tooth, 87.23% on the premolar tooth, and 78.34% on the molar tooth. At the dogs groups, similar Index of bacterial plaque were observed on the different dental groups. The dogs from group II and the incisive tooth group showed minar bacterial plaque index.

The aim of this study was to describe the morphology and biometry of the apical ligament of the penis of Girolando bulls. For this purpose, it was dissected 32 penis of Girolando bulls obtained from slaughterhouses and kept frozen until their dissection. The animals were 36 to 48 month old and weighted between 480 and 540kg. The origin of the apical ligament occurred at 15.1±2.9cm distally to the caudal loop of the sigmoid flexure and its insertion occurred at 1.4±0.7cm proximally to the neck of the glans. The length of the apical ligament was 19.9±2.6cm. The width was 1.9±0.6mm at its origin, 2.2±0.8mm at its insertion and 35.2±10mm at the insertion of the internal lamina of prepuce. The average thickness along its extension varied from 0.7 to 1.0mm. On the free portion of the penis the apical ligament involved predominantly the dorsum and the left side of the penis, and its attachment to the tunica albuginea varied along its extension. The apical ligament is firmly attached to the tunica albuginea on its origin, insertion and on the left side of the penis, but dorsally and on the right side of the penis this union is made only through loose connective tissue. Significant linear relation was observed between length and circumference of the penis with length of the apical ligament, but the relation between these penis parameters and the width of the apical ligament was low.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the cicatricial repair of perforated cornea in rabbits, by using the N-butyl cyanoacrylate adhesive compared to the 910-polyglactine no 7-0 thread suture through macroscopic and histological assays. Corneas from 18 adult rabbits were perforated and soon after submitted the synthesis with N-butyl cyanoacrylate synthetic adhesive right ocular globe or by simple interrupted sutures using the 910-polyglactine thread left ocular globe. The animals were separate in three groups of the same number. Examination after 7, 15, and 30 days post-operative showed that both the synthetic adhesive and the suture were efficient in the synthesis of the surgical wounds, thus stabilizing the intra-ocular contents. The N-butyl cyanoacrylate adhesive was showed to be superior to the 910-polyglactine suture thread with regards to the evolution and the organization of the healing process.

The objective of this study was to evaluate, in farms, the trans and postoperative periods of teaser bulls prepared by the surgical techniques of lateral deviation of prepuce and penis (lateral deviation) and lateral deviation with a fixation of the preputial mucosa to a new orifice (new orifice), using as tranquilizer xylazine or xylazine/acepromazine association, added of local anesthesia. 156 bulls, at 12 to 18 months of age were used; 108 bulls were submitted to lateral deviation of prepuce and penis and 48 to new orifice. The bulls were casually allocated in two groups composed by 78 animals (a group receiving only xylazine, another group receiving xylazine/acepromazine association, both receiving local anesthesia with lidocayne 2%). The bulls were weekly appraised, by thirty days. Xylazine/acepromazine association resulted in postoperative complications in 72 animals (92,31%) and xylazine resulted in postoperative complications in 29 animals (37,18%). The c2 test showed that Xylazine/acepromazine association resulted in increase of postoperative complications.
