THE antimetabolite activity of a series of 5-arylazopyrimidines (I) has been observed in these laboratories. This type of compound, which is synthesised by the coupling of a diazotised arylamine with a 5-unsubstituted pyrimidine, has been described previ~usly~-~ but, although slight inhibition in certain bacterial systems was observed2, no specific antimetabolite activity was reported. Compounds of structure I are converted on oxidation to 8-aryl-8-azapurines (11)2-4, which proved to be essentially devoid of antimetabolite activity in our studies. This investigation began with the synthesis of new derivatives of structures I and I1

Summary The oral administration of as little as 1.0 g of streptomycin daily eliminated E. coli from the stool of 5 patients within 2 days. The stool could be kept free of these microorganisms as long as adequate streptomycin levels were maintained, but reappeared promptly when it was discontinued. Swabs taken at operation from the mucosa of the colons of two patients who had received preoperative streptomycin did not contain E. coli. These microorganisms also were eliminated from the distal segment of a colostomy by streptomycin lavage per rectum. Streptomycin did not affect the anaerobic flora of the stool, and had no appreciable effect on the fecal streptococci

Conclusions The new synthetic media recently described by Dubos for the rapid cultivation of Mycobacteria can be successfully employed to isolate tubercle bacilli from various pathologic material. A combination of rapid culture with guinea pig confirmation where indicated should result in a marked reduction of the time required for the laboratory diagnosis of tuberculosis.
