The female silkmoth Bombyx mori L. emits a second pheromone component bombykal (E-10, Z-12-hexade-cadien-1-al) in addition to the well-known sexual attractant bombykol (E-10, Z-12-hexadecadien-1-ol). Bombykal stimulates its own specialized and highly sensitive olfactory cells of the male moth. Surprisingly, the aldehyde inhibits the release of the males wing-fluttering response to bombykol.

catalytic subunit to dephosphorytate TPI to DPI without added time requirement [3, 11]. The release of Ca p+ during dephosphorylation of TPI starts in a fraction of msec. The voltage drop due to the Ca p+ release and ligand drop starts the depolarization, that is maintained beyond t msec by the passive influx of Na +. The Na + channels are pores with a radius of about t ~ [9]. They permit a voltage-dependent [1, 2, 12] fast influx of Na + (with a maximum of about 108 Na + ions/see).

The uptake of 3H-bombykol and related compounds was investigated on the antennae of the silkmoth Bombyx mori with elution and liquid scintillation techniques. The pheromone uptake is a sum of several time-dependent processes and more or less susceptible against pretreatment with organic solvents, buffers and SH-inhibitors. Before and after enzymatic conversion the pheromone molecules are mainly adsorbed non-covalently (99 per cent) onto micromolecular structures.

Abstract Thin-layer scraper — a half-automatic scraper for precoated thin-layer plates A new half-automatic scraper for precoated thin-layer plates is described. This scraper permits complete transfer of zones without mixing of test substances. The instrument is simple in operation. The zones are separated with high analytical accuracy in short time.

Abstract Thin-layer chromatographic analysis of radioactively labelled insect pheromones. Metabolites of [3H]bombykol Highly labelled [3H]bombykol is extensively metabolized on the antennae of the silkmoth Bombyx mori into free fatty acids and fatty acid esters. The metabolites of the acid fraction consist of one long-chain unsaturated fatty acid of the type of 10-trans, 12-cis-hexadecadienoic acid (ca. 90%) and of one short-chain unidentified fatty acid (ca. 10%). The neutral fraction contains except unchanged [3H]bombykol at least six long-chain 3H-labelled fatty acid esters.

Abstract A fully automatic sample applicator for thin-layer and paper chromatography A fully automatic sample applicator for thin-layer and paper chromatogaphy is described. This apparatus permits the application of sample solutions in the range of 10 μl to 4 ml in the form of thin lines. A strong drying effect is achieved by the special construction of the spray system; no clubshaped thickenings in the lines are produced. A simple glass sprayer makes the routine use of radioactive isotopes possible.
