Objectives : To evaluate the neuroprotective effects of the essential oil from Sohaphwangwon (SH), a Chinese traditional medicinal prescription in a Parkinson`s disease mouse model. Methods : 1. The neuroprotective effect of SH on primary neuronal cells was examined by using 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion (MPP+). 2. The neuroprotective effect of SH was examined in a Parkinson`s disease mouse model. C57BL/6 mice treated with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP, 30 mg/kg/day), intraperitoneal (i.p.) for 5 days. SH inhalation was applied before MPTP treatment for 7 days and continued until 12 days after the first MPTP treatment. 3. To find out the intracellular target signal molecule(s) regarding the neuroprotective effect of SH essential oil, brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) and synaptic protein SNAP25 were examined by Western blot analysis. Results : 1. MPP+ induced a concentration-dependent decrease in cell viability. However, in the presence of 3 and 5 ug/ml of SH, MPP+-induced cell death was significantly reduced. 2. SH inhalation in MPTP mice led to the restoration of behavioral impairment and rescued tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive dopaminergic neurodegeneration. 3. In SH / MPTP mice, BDNF and SNAP25 increased. Conclusions : This experiment suggests that the neuroprotective effect of SH essential oil is mediated by the expression of BDNF. Furthermore, SH essential oil may serve as a potential preventive or therapeutic agent regarding Parkinson`s disease.

AbstractObjectives :The purpose of this study is to show the differences of mental stress measured with heart rate variability (HRV) and to evaluate the effects of Aromatherapy under mental stress , according to the depression index. Methods :The volunteers were allocated into 2 groups by BDI scores. Each group is divided into 2 subgroups again. After instrumentation and 10-minutes rest period, mental stress by op eration was provided for 15-minutes. HRV was recorded before and after the mental stress. Then the control g roups rested for 15-minutes. The experimental groups were treated with Aromatherapy. And then HRV was recorde d.Results :1. There were no significant differences in the mean HRT and SD NN between each group.2. LF, HF, and LF norm showed different changes in each group.3. LF/HF ratio showed significant changes. Conclusions :These results suggest that psychic factor makes an important ru le under the mental stress and the effect of Aromatherapy, and Aromatherapy is effective to recover mental s tress.Key Words :Key words : Depression, Mental Stress, Heart Rate Variability(H RV), Aromatherapy.Received : Received : August 14, 2012; Revised : August 31, 201 2; Accepted : September 04, 2012Correspondence : Geun-Woo Kim, Dept. Objectives : In this case report, we will present three patients diagnosed with acute stress disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder improved by application of oriental medical treatments. Methods : We treated three patients with acute stress disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder by oriental medical treatments. The effect of oriental medical treatments were evaluated by STAI and clinical symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, palpitation, startle response. Results : As a result of oriental treatments, clinical symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, palpitation, startle response were improved, and STAI scores also decreased. Conclusions : These results suggest that oriental treatments may have an effect on acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Objectives : To evaluate the in vitro scavenging activity, inhibitory effect of LDL oxidation of pro-oxidant reactive species, anti-platelet aggregative effects and anti-thrombosis effects in response to treatment with SA using various screening methods including biological and non-biological oxidants. Methods : The antioxidant activity concerning extract from SA was studied with in vitro methods by measuring the antioxidant activity by TEAC, measuring the scavenging effects on reactive oxygen species (ROS) [superoxide anion, hydroxyl radical] and on reactive nitrogen species (RNS) [nitric oxide and peroxynitrite] as well as measuring the inhibitory effect on -induced human LDL oxidation and the inhibitory effect on thrombin-induced platelet aggregation and thrombosis. Results : SA extracts were found to have a potent scavenging activity regarding oxidative stress as well as an inhibitory effect towards LDL oxidation, platelet aggregation, and thrombosis. Conclusions : The SA extracts have anti-oxidative and anti-atherosclerotic effects in vitro system, which can be used for developing pharmaceutical drugs against oxidative stress and atherosclerosis.

AbstractObjectives :The purpose of this literature review was to clarify the procedure of historical changes centered on medications of 10 kinds of headache in U000f0854DonguibogamU000f0855(東醫寶鑑).Methods :We searched the database-China Academic Journals(CAJ). For pape rs published since 2007-2011, which are classified in categories. Results :1.By searching medications of 10 kinds of headache in U000f0854DonguibogamU000f0855(東醫寶鑑), 32 prescriptions were selected.2.We reviewed the books, which is clarified as the reference of the aforementioned 32 prescriptions in U000f0854DonguibogamU000f0855(東醫寶鑑).3.31 books mentioned in head part of U000f0854UibujeonrokU000f0855(醫部全錄) were also selected as the reference, and we searched the aforementioned 32 prescriptions in the former 31 b ooks. Conclusions :1.The herb medications of 10 kinds of headache in U000f0854DonguibogamU000f0855(東醫寶鑑) were mostly affected by U000f0854SeuideukhyobangU000f0855(世醫得效方).2.21 prescriptions among 32 prescriptions in U000f0854DonguibogamU000f0855 were directly quoted from the books that the prescriptions were firstly appeared and 11 prescriptions among the 32 prescriptions were re-quoted from other books that succeeded the source books.3.We suspect that the components, dosages of the herb medications of headache in chapter Du(頭) of U000f0854DonguibogamU000f0855 were revised, according to the authors clinical experience and circumstances.4.Cheon-gungdajo-san(川芎茶調散) was the most cited prescription in medical books. A total of 12 books were recorded from U000f0854Hwajegukbang(和劑局方)U000f0855to U000f0854Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑)U000f0855.Key Words:Donguibogam, Headache, 10 Kinds of Headache, Herb Medicine, Lit erature Study, Procedure of Historical ChangesReceived : May 24, 2012; Revised : June 14, 2012; Accepted : Ju ne 15, 2012Correspondence : Geun-Woo Kim, Dongguk University Bundang Orien tal Hospital, 87-2 Sunae-dong, Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea.Tel : 031-710-3737, FAX : 031-710-3780, E-Mail : [email protected]* This is a master’s dissertation of the Department of Oriental Neuropsychiatry Medicine of the Graduate School of Dongguk University on February 2012.
