Proposing an IoT-Based Healthcare Platform to Integrate Patients, Physicians and Ambulance Services

Itamir de Morais Barroca Filho; Gibeon Soares de Aquino Junior

There is a global concern with the increasing number of patients at hospitals caused by population ageing and chronic diseases. Several studies indicated the need to minimize the process of hospitalization and the effects related to the high cost of patient care. In this context, a promising trend in healthcare is to move medical checks routines from a hospital (hospital-centric) to the patient’s home (home-centric), but to make it possible we need Internet of Things (IoT)-based technologies and platforms to enable remote health monitoring. The application of IoT in healthcare area is a common hope because it will allow hospitals to operate more efficiently and patients to receive better treatment. With the use of IoT-based healthcare applications, there is an unprecedented opportunity to improve the quality and efficiency of the medical treatment and consequently improve patients’ wellness, as well as a better application of the government’s financial resources. Thus, based on this context, this paper aims to propose an IoT-based healthcare platform for the remote monitoring of patients in critical condition. It involves embedding sensors and actuators in patients, physicians, clinical staff, medical equipment and physical spaces in order to monitor, track and alert.

IoT-Based Healthcare Applications: A Review

Itamir de Morais Barroca Filho; Gibeon Soares de Aquino Junior

The high cost of healthcare services, the aging population and the increase of chronic disease are becoming a global concern. Several studies have indicated the need for strategies to minimize the process of hospitalization and the effects related to the high cost of patient care. A promising trend in healthcare is to move the routines of medical checks from a hospital (hospital-centric) to the patient’s home (home-centric). Moreover, recent advances in microelectronics, wireless, sensing and information have boosted the advent of a revolutionary model involving systems and communication technology, enabling smarter ways to “make things happen”. This new paradigm, known as the Internet of Things (IoT), has a broad applicability in several areas, including healthcare. The full application of this paradigm in healthcare area is a common hope because it will allow hospitals to operate more efficiently and patients to receive better treatment. With the use of this technology-based healthcare approach, there is an unprecedented opportunity to improve the quality and efficiency of the medical treatment and consequently improve the wellness of the patients, as well as a better application of government financial resources. Based on this context, this paper aims to describe a review to comprehend the current state and future trends for healthcare applications based on IoT infrastructure, and also to find areas for further investigations.

A Software Reference Architecture for IoT-Based Healthcare Applications

Itamir de Morais Barroca Filho; Gibeon Soares de Aquino Junior

With the Internet of Things (IoT), a myriad of connected things and the data captured by them is making possible the development of applications in various markets, such as transportation, buildings, energy, home, industrial and healthcare. Concerning healthcare, the development of these applications is expected as part of the future, since IoT can be the main enabler for distributed healthcare applications, having a significant potential to contribute to the overall decrease of healthcare costs while increasing the health outcomes. However, there are a lot of challenges in the development and deployment of this kind of application, such as interoperability, availability, usability and security. The complex and heterogeneous nature of the IoT-based healthcare applications makes its design, development and deployment difficult. It also causes an increase in the development cost, as well as an interoperability problem with the existing systems. To contribute to solve the aforementioned challenges, this paper aims to improve the understanding and systematization of the IoT-based healthcare applications’ architectural design. It proposes a software reference architecture, named Reference Architecture for Healthcare (RAH), to systematically organize the main elements of IoT-based healthcare applications, its responsibilities and interactions, promoting a common understanding of these applications’ architecture to minimize the challenges related to it.

OffDroid: A Framework for Offline Working in Android Applications

Jean G. F. Guedes; Gibeon Soares de Aquino Junior; Victor J. G. L. de Oliveira

Given the growing demand for the development of mobile applications, driven by use increasingly common in smartphones and tablets grew in society the need for remote data access in full in the use of mobile application without connectivity environments where there is no provision network access at all times. Given this reality, this work proposes a framework that present main functions are the provision of a persistence mechanism, replication and data synchronization, contemplating the creation, deletion, update and display persisted or requested data, even though the mobile device without connectivity with the network. From the point of view of the architecture and programming practices, it reflected in defining strategies for the main functions of the framework are met. Through a controlled study was to validate the solution proposal, being found as the gains in reducing the number of lines code and the amount of time required to perform the development of an application without there being significant increase for the operations.

An Extensible Platform for the Transformation of Heterogeneous Data in Smart Cities

Cícero A. Silva; Gibeon Soares de Aquino Junior

The urban environment has a lot of devices that use different technologies, which makes the integration of data generated in them a difficult process due to their heterogeneity. However, it is important to manage these data in an integrated way, enabling the exchange of information between existing fields and assisting in the decision-making process. Moreover, theres no way to tell how this data will need to be processed since each application may require it to be available obeying specific processes. Thus, this paper describes the design and implementation of a platform that aims to integrate, process and make available data streams from heterogeneous sources. It also defines an extensible data processing flow, which makes the creation of new processes for existing data and the inclusion of new types of data easier. Finally, a case study was conducted, which used a parking lot as scenario and assessed some important aspects related to platform implementation.
