There is a global concern with the increasing number of patients at hospitals caused by population ageing and chronic diseases. Several studies indicated the need to minimize the process of hospitalization and the effects related to the high cost of patient care. In this context, a promising trend in healthcare is to move medical checks routines from a hospital (hospital-centric) to the patient’s home (home-centric), but to make it possible we need Internet of Things (IoT)-based technologies and platforms to enable remote health monitoring. The application of IoT in healthcare area is a common hope because it will allow hospitals to operate more efficiently and patients to receive better treatment. With the use of IoT-based healthcare applications, there is an unprecedented opportunity to improve the quality and efficiency of the medical treatment and consequently improve patients’ wellness, as well as a better application of the government’s financial resources. Thus, based on this context, this paper aims to propose an IoT-based healthcare platform for the remote monitoring of patients in critical condition. It involves embedding sensors and actuators in patients, physicians, clinical staff, medical equipment and physical spaces in order to monitor, track and alert.

The high cost of healthcare services, the aging population and the increase of chronic disease are becoming a global concern. Several studies have indicated the need for strategies to minimize the process of hospitalization and the effects related to the high cost of patient care. A promising trend in healthcare is to move the routines of medical checks from a hospital (hospital-centric) to the patient’s home (home-centric). Moreover, recent advances in microelectronics, wireless, sensing and information have boosted the advent of a revolutionary model involving systems and communication technology, enabling smarter ways to “make things happen”. This new paradigm, known as the Internet of Things (IoT), has a broad applicability in several areas, including healthcare. The full application of this paradigm in healthcare area is a common hope because it will allow hospitals to operate more efficiently and patients to receive better treatment. With the use of this technology-based healthcare approach, there is an unprecedented opportunity to improve the quality and efficiency of the medical treatment and consequently improve the wellness of the patients, as well as a better application of government financial resources. Based on this context, this paper aims to describe a review to comprehend the current state and future trends for healthcare applications based on IoT infrastructure, and also to find areas for further investigations.

Mobile computing is changing the way society accesses information. People are using mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets to make transactions and consume data more and more each day. Driven by this kind of use, many companies and institutions are developing mobile versions of their information systems. But what should these companies and institutions consider when developing a mobile versions of its information systems? It is important to note that the mobile version is not the redesign or copy of all functionalities from the existing information system. Considering this scenario of mobile application development from existing web information systems, we proposed a process named Metamorphosis. This process provides a set of activities subdivided into four phases - requirements, design, development and deployment -, to assist in the creation of mobile applications from existing web information systems. Thus, this article aims to present a case study of the Metamorphosis process in the development of SIGEventos Mobile, a mobile version based on SIGEventos web information system, approaching the feasibility of the use of this process.

With the Internet of Things (IoT), a myriad of connected things and the data captured by them is making possible the development of applications in various markets, such as transportation, buildings, energy, home, industrial and healthcare. Concerning healthcare, the development of these applications is expected as part of the future, since IoT can be the main enabler for distributed healthcare applications, having a significant potential to contribute to the overall decrease of healthcare costs while increasing the health outcomes. However, there are a lot of challenges in the development and deployment of this kind of application, such as interoperability, availability, usability and security. The complex and heterogeneous nature of the IoT-based healthcare applications makes its design, development and deployment difficult. It also causes an increase in the development cost, as well as an interoperability problem with the existing systems. To contribute to solve the aforementioned challenges, this paper aims to improve the understanding and systematization of the IoT-based healthcare applications’ architectural design. It proposes a software reference architecture, named Reference Architecture for Healthcare (RAH), to systematically organize the main elements of IoT-based healthcare applications, its responsibilities and interactions, promoting a common understanding of these applications’ architecture to minimize the challenges related to it.

Internet of Things allows people’s everyday objects to be connected to the Internet and to each other, which gives them the ability to communicate between themselves and with the end users. This allows such objects to contribute to the improvement of the accomplishment of tasks such as: environment monitoring, people’s health monitoring, natural resources management, and many other activities. This way, this work designs, implements and evaluates a solution for queue monitoring. This solution used as its first use scenario the University Restaurant (UR) of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte - UFRN). The goal was to inform the restaurant’s users the best times to go to the UR in order to avoid queues, consequently making better use of their time. To achieve this goal, a prototype of the solution was developed involving sensors, connectivity, a mobile application and an IoT platform.

The evolving in Internet of Things and the plenty diversity of electronic components bring challenges and demand high level tools to improve the application development process. Concurrent computing is useful for catching the logic structure of a problem or solution and handling different and independent components, which is convenient in this context. Therefore, in this paper is presented a library for supporting a multithreading approach in microcontrollers, which is beneficial to improve the development process of new applications. The library brings benefits on development time, readability, writability and reliability of the code, and on software maintenance, besides helping with blocking tasks. Finally, is demonstrated how this solution is employed on a Smart Parking system.

The Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) has information systems which capture different kinds of data related to the institution itself, as well as its academics and students. Much of this data produces information that is available to users through reports found in the systems. However, there are demands that often come from these users, who wish to obtain data not available in the reports, which requires the need for manual extraction and, thereafter, generates costs to the institution. Furthermore, there are several studies, research projects and applications developed by academics, students and companies that require the use of this information, either to offer more transparency or to develop new ideas and promoting innovation. In this aspect, this paper aims to present an experience of development of a solution for providing corporate data using a service API.
