Unfortunately, the five-year survival rate of lung cancer is relatively low compared with other cancers. Therefore, better predictors are need for prognosis, therapeutic strategy, risk stratification and predicting long-term mortality of lung cancer. Recently, increasing data suggest that Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS) and procalcitonin levels are useful predictor cancer prognosis. In this study, we retrospectively investigated the correlation of GPS or procalcitonin to clinical variables in patients with pretreatment lung cancer. In 135 patients with pretreatment lung cancer, GPS, procalcitonin, demographic characteristics, hematological, coagulation, biochemical, inflammatory and cardiac markers were measured. Monocyte, eosinophil, basophil, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, red cell distribution width (RDW), platelet to lymphocyte ratio, mean platelet volume to platecrit ratio, D-dimer and prothrombin time (PT) levels were higher, whereas mean platelet volume was lower than their normal ranges. Glucose and sodium levels were low, whereas gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), total bilirubin, creatinine and inorganic phosphorus concentrations were increase compared their normal ranges. Procalcitonin, high sensitivity C-reactive protein and troponin-I concentrations were elevated compared with their normal ranges. GPS had significantly positive or negative relations to cancer stage, hematological, coagulation, biochemical, inflammatory and troponin-I. Based on the data, we suggest that GPS may be a potent and useful predictor for prognosis, therapeutic strategy, risk stratification and predicting long-term mortality of lung cancer.

This study was designed to examine effects of Korean Berchemia berchemiaefolia (Makino) Koidz (BBK) on diet induced-fatty liver. 45 male SD rats were divided into three groups: normal diet (control group, n=15), 40% fat diet-induced obese rats (fat group, n=15), and BBK extract diet with 40% fat diet-induced obese rats (BBK group, n=15). Hematological and biochemical variables were measured. Total Received (April 20, 2015), Review Request(April 21, 2015), Review Result(May 06, 2015) Accepted(May 27, 2015), Published(June 30, 2015) (Corresponding Author) 609-757 Department of Clinical Laboratory Science, College of Health Sciences, Catholic University of Pusan, Busan ,Korea email: [email protected] 614-714 Department of Clinical Laboratory Science, College of Nursing & Healthcare Sciences, Dong-Eui University, Busan ,Korea email: [email protected] 614-714 Department of Clinical Laboratory Science, College of Nursing & Healthcare Sciences, Dong-Eui University, Busan , Korea email: [email protected] *This paper was supported by RESEARCH FUND offered from Catholic University of Pusan This work was supported by the Brain Busan 21 Project in 2015. The Influence of Korean Berchemia berchemiaefolia (Makino) Koidz Extract on Nonalcoholic Hepatic Steatosis in Rats Copyright c 2015 HSST 132 leukocyte, neutrophil, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, erythrocyte, platelet, hemoglobin, and red distribution width levels were significantly lower than in BBK group than in fatty group. Glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, and BUN levels in BBK group were significantly lower than those of fatty group. BBK group showed significantly lower liver fatty degeneration (steatosis). These results suggest that Korean Berchemia berchemiaefolia (Makino) Koidz exerts anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity and ameliorative liver fatty degeneration effects.

Control Effect of Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis with Cinnamon (Cinnamomum japonicum) Extract

Gil-Hyun Lee; Kyung-Yae Hyu

Cinnamomum japonicum(CCE) is a genus of plants in the family Cinnamomum. Traditionally CCE has been already used for traditional medicine in Korea. But the study about antidepressant-like activity and related molecular mechanisms of CCE were not studied well. The effects of subacute treatment with CCE(100 and 200 mg/kg, p.o.) on immobility and FST-induced changes of immune parameters were investigated by using the forced swimming test (FST) in rats. As a result, CCE immobility decreases with a dose-dependency in the FST. The levels of cortisol, IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α of treatment group were significantly decreased than those of the FST group. Similarly p-p65 and p-65 activity of treatment group were decreased than those of the FST group. In all, these results indicate that CCE extract can be a very effective treatment for depression, suggesting that The down-regulation of NFkB activity is related to Antidepressant Effect of Berchemia berchemiaefolia.

Antidepressant Effect of Acer tegmentosum Maxim on Forced Swimming Test in the Rat

Byung-Moon Jin; Gil-Hyun Lee; Kyung-Yae Hyun

Acer tegmentosum Maxim (AT) is a species of the maple genus, which is native to North-Eastern China and Korea. Traditionally, AT has been already used for pain relief in Korea. On the other hand, its antidepressant-like activity and related molecular mechanisms is not completely understood. Using the Forced Swimming Test (FST), the effects of a subacute treatment with AT(100, 200, and 400 mg/kg, p.o.) on the immobility and FST-induced changes to the immune parameters, cortisol, ACTH, and cytokine, in rats were investigated. The tendency of immobility showed a dose-dependent decrease in FST. The levels of cortisol, IL-6 and IL-1β in the peripheral blood were increased significantly after FST exposure. Overall, these results suggest that AT treatment can decrease the immobility time and the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the FST, suggesting that the anti-inflammatory effects of AT might be involved in the antidepressant-like effect.
