This work, inspired by a careful analysis of the recent book of Fabio Targhetta, “Signor Maestro Onorandissimo”. Imparare a scrivere lettere nella scuola italiana tra Otto e Novecento, tries to draw a quick but comprehensive picture on the most recent works of history of education and of the history of the school and the main areas of study in which it is possible to understand ferments of great interest. In this context, the book of Targhetta is an interesting document of the new frontiers of educational history for its ability to value sources until now unpublished, for the intelligence demonstrated in reading them and interpreting them. Education reforms as developed throughout Europe in recent years and under central government pressures have drawn heavily upon the ‘school efficacy’ model. The most serious critique to the theories of school effectiveness comes from the social and pedagogical theories of personalisation. A renewed interest in the issue of personalisation has been expressed by British officials in recent policy documents.
